This Is a dumb question....

Whats the difference between road hunting and spot and stalk from a truck? is road hunting when you shoot it out the window? It seems like a dumb question but I saw that other post and it sparked my curiosity.

It is not a dumb question since many hunters don't realize it is illegal to use a motorized vehicle to locate game. A few years ago I read about hunters who were cited for using vehicles to follow snow geese and then setting up where they landed. i'll try to find the specific section of the regs on the PGC website if is functioning the way it should.

Here is the section of the code that addresses this issue.

Sec. 2308. Unlawful devices and methods.

(a) General rule. - Except as otherwise provided in this title, it is unlawful for any person to hunt or aid, abet, assist or conspire to hunt any game or wildlife through the use of:

(1) An automatic firearm or similar device.

(2) A semiautomatic rifle or pistol.

(3) Reserved.

(4) A semiautomatic shotgun or magazine shotgun for hunting or taking small game, furbearers, turkey or unprotected birds unless the shotgun is plugged to a two-shell capacity in the magazine.

(5) Any device operated by air, chemical or gas cylinder by which a projectile of any size or kind can be discharged or propelled.

(6) Any recorded call or sound or recorded or electronically amplified imitation of a call or sound of any description or any other call or sound or imitation of calls or sounds which are prohibited by regulations of the commission. The commission shall be authorized, by resolution, to adopt rules and regulations authorizing the limited use of recorded calls or sounds or recorded or electronically amplified imitation of calls or sounds when such use is necessary in the commission's judgment to protect the public health and safety or to preserve that species or any other endangered by it.

(7) A vehicle or conveyance of any kind or its attachment propelled by other than manpower. Nothing in this subsection shall pertain to any motorboat or sailboat if the motor has been completely shut off or sail furled, and the progress thereof has ceased.

to me...road hunting is poaching, unless permitted for disability or what ever..imo allows a disabled person not to have to walk onto public lands, can use the road as a "crossing or clearing" to find deer.

truck hunting...sittin in a "blind " on top of a suburban and someone drives around while you hunt..which is legal is some places, such as texas..but all the roads are on private land!!no public roads!!

I didn't know there was such a thing as Spot & Stalk from a Truck!:guiness:

In some areas you can use a spotting scope to check the ridges for deer and then leave the truck and stalk them on foot. IMHO that would be a legal and ethical way to hunt but a WCO could have a different opinion.:s4:

The only stupid question is one not asked. I agree, road hunting is 100% illegal, and, for the fact of the matter, unethical. Don't shoot animals from the road, because that is what the ANTI's want to portray us as: simpletons who shoot the first thing that moves. Things like this only hurt the reputations of the hunters of North America and it's unfair. I am an EXTREMELY ethical person, and it drives me nuts to see stuff like this go on. Track deer until you find it, never assume you missed, and don't ROAD HUNT. Either of the options stated are unlawful and unethical. Don't do it. Thank you.

Guess I'll need to be clearing up what I was trying to find out hahaha.

Ok spot and stalk from a truck to me means driving around with bino's/spotting scope finding something you'd like to harvest getting out gearing up and walking to the game (obviously its different with a rifle as you probablly wouldn't have to walk as far to get a shot but I digress).

Now to me road hunting is driving around with the intentions of just stopping and shooting walking up grabbing it throwing it in the back and leaving. That's what my mental image of it is, however is there really a difference? Like its kind of shades of gray there. Its hard for me to find an effective way to describe it to you guys I guess. Like spot and stalk like I said requires a lot more effort then how I described road hunting but neither compare to the leg work we're looking at with traditional bowhunting type setups I.e. Sitting in a stand or blind hunting them.

I probabbly just made this stuff way way way more confusing but I tried.

It gets even more confusing when you consider this.

" It is unlawful to alight from a vehicle and shoot at any wildlife until the the shooter is at least 25 yds from the traveled portion of the roadway."

That seems to imply that it is legal to harvest game that is located by using a motor vehicle.

well each state has their own laws. and each person has their own idea what it is. large # of rules posted by bluebird do not apply in Alaska.
i don't see it as unethical and not illegal. in Alaska as long as you do not shoot from , on or across a road.
Haul road hunting for Caribou is road hunting for the most part you can drive 100 miles and not see a caribou. very few people will park their truck and not use it for the week that they are there. I do for the most part but I "road" hunt from my jet boat all the time. either drive until we see a 'bou or stop every few miles and look with binoculars, if we see one 1-2 miles away we get back in the boat and close the distance. if that is unethicial in your book well paint me that color. In Alaska alot of hunting is done from atv or boats when you spot the game you make the stalk. even from airplanes....but for most animals you can not fly and shoot the same day. ok for deer and some areas for caribou.
large expanses of land in the west make things alot different than hunting 40 acre lots in the east. with very different game densities and habits.
