Broken Tine on a Deer You Have Killed

Just curious about your guys opinions. If you killed a beautiful typical 10pt buck and it had a broken tine (right at the base). would you leave as it was to be mounted or get the taxidermist to re-create the point?

blakefrautschi 12-13-2009 06:27 AM

leave it as it is... thats how you shot it, if you didnt like that it had a broken tine dont shoot it and hope that you see him next year

This is what happened to me last year. I knew exactly how many points and how long they were by all the trail cam pics i had. When i finally shot the ol boy he had broken off his g3 and a few other random points taking him from a 19 pointer to a 16 pointer. If i would have had to taxi add those points then he would have easily made P&Y non typical but thats not how i shot him. I think the broken tines and stickers gives him character (like he didnt already have enough!:s2:)

I'd leave it as it was when I shot it. Although, if it had all the points but busted one off when the animal crashed into a tree after I shot it, I'd have that re-attached if I could find it.

If you think it would look better then fix it. There's no shame in doing it. I would do it in a heartbeat if I wanted it to look like he did when he grew it. Some people get a piece of art restore or an antique restored...why not a deer rack. You are the one who has to look at it not someone else. It doesn't make someone more of a pure hunter for putting a broken rack on the wall. It should be a personal choice.

I would have left him laying there in the woods where I shot him. Let the creatures eat him since it was discovered he was less than perfect.

Leave it, I don't believe that a set of hunter killed antlers should be altered. About the only way I would accept antler repair would be IF something happened AFTER you shot the buck that caused the antlers to break... like smashing into a tree or something. Other than that, leave 'em alone, in my humble opinion.

I have the same issue this year. My buck had three points on each side, on the end of each beam. Looked like a tripod stand. He broke one off about 3 inches long. I may have it fixed just because it's different, plus first I am having mounted. Every deer is a trophy and I don't think it matters what you do, its a personal prefrence. I'm not entering him in any contest. Nothing wrong honoring that buck for all he was at one time either ; )

thanks guys, i didnt personally kill this buck but a close family member did and we were discussing this topic. not sure yet which way he decided. i personally agree with leave it like it is unless he busted it off on the tree crashing into it scenario but to each his own. i dont think he even recognized it being broken off before he shot the buck. i will try to get a digital pic and post up of the buck.

cwanty03 12-13-2009 09:09 PM

leave it!!!!

jnrbronc 12-14-2009 05:05 AM

I leave them alone, busted as shot.

Western MA Hunter 12-14-2009 05:26 AM

i would leave it as is... the way you shot it... unless it broke after you shot it on the run...

burniegoeasily 12-14-2009 05:50 AM

Most every deer Ive shot, let alone mounted, have had busted up tines. I leave them just as they are. Last year, I shot a 9 point, that would have been a 11 point, except the broke off his main beam and one tine with it. He is euromounted with all busted tines and all.

Enough said!!!!!!!:guiness:

ManofTheFall 12-14-2009 10:28 AM

In my earlier years of hunting I would of had it fixed. But now, any deer I shoot stays how it is.

browningbolt 12-14-2009 01:18 PM

If it aint real bone it aint bone.My opinion is leave it as when you shot it unless damaged afterwords....

DeBauche11 12-14-2009 01:43 PM

I would prob leave the side the way it was broken but then i would break off the points on the other side to make the buck look more even

WIbuckchaser 12-14-2009 05:10 PM

Leave it the way it was when you knocked him down. The only way I fix it is after the mount falls off the wall and shatters on the hard wood floor. You shot him for what he was, not for what he could be.

My thoughts exactly.

btomlin 12-15-2009 05:55 AM

I would personally leave it alone or not shoot it in 1st place with a broken tine. I've passed a couple of shooters that were busted up in the past.

One got shot and the guy fixed it. When I went to look at the mount it had a drop tine added. The guy said he never killed a drop tine buck and since he was having it fixed anyway he thought he'd have it added. Too Funny!!!:eek2:

bowfly 12-15-2009 10:25 AM

agreed, leave it the way it is

this brings up a good side point...i was watching whitetail freaks, i believe it was, dude shoots a big 8 in late season archery...he goes to lift the deer's head up, and the whole main beam on the right side comes off in his hand...question now, how does it score after he pulled it off? Just a big 4?

i saw that also...that was really strange. i don't know the answer to your question though.

k.pratt 12-15-2009 05:25 PM

i say if you want to fix it then do so. i would! my dad and brother each had one fixed, no shame at all in it! IT IS YOUR TROPHY NO ONE ELSES!

125py 12-15-2009 07:18 PM
