I saw exactly 2 bucks this year. One spike and one 4 point. They are both in my freezer now, except for what I've already consumed. One doe to keep them company, and now I'm waiting for a big boy. I'm pretty sure I won't see him, but I'll be out anyway. This is the first year I've had the opportunity to take an antlered buck with my bow, maybe next year I'll be an elitist and look for huge horns. Then again, maybe not.

It's also easy to pass judgement on people when you get to hunt prime places. Killing any deer with a bow on some highly pressured public place can be more of an accomplishment than killing a huge buck on a private, pristine, untainted Iowa or Illinois corn farm. I've hunting Illinois 4 times now and let me tell you, killing a big buck on private land up there is nothing compared to the challenge of killing one back here in Alabama. Those deer get so little hunting pressure that even 3 and 4 year old bucks up there aren't as cautious and woodwise as most of our does.

Hey Todd,

Come hunt with me and show me how to kill "a huge buck on a private, pristine, untainted Iowa or Illinois corn farm". I own one (a private, pristine, untainted Illinois corn farm). I rarely seem to get to the big bucks and so do the other hunters surrounding me. I think you are way off base in your comment about the deer here.

I am one that will not purposefully shoot a buck I think will score under 150". Why? Because I have two bucks on the wall; one 125" and one in the 140's. I have a pile of antlers in the basement from numerous small bucks. I made a personal decision to not shoot a buck unless I intend to put it on the wall, which for me is one bigger than the two I have there. I hold the guys that hunt with me to the same standard. If any one wants deer meat, shoot a doe. IMO any buck in Illinois will grow an impressive set of antlers given time. Therefore, I am inclined to let them grow even if someone on the other side of the fence may shoot them.

On the other hand, I let my son shoot two little bucks for his first two deer. Yeah, they're gone and not going to get big, but it didn't hurt much. However, now it is time for him to hold out for something bigger.

Those that don't hold out cannot complain about not seeing deer or not having any big deer. If you shoot it, it can not get any bigger. I don't hold it against anyone, but don't want to hear them bitch. Most don't.

And yeah Todd, I am not joking about the offer. If you think it is easy, come show me and the hundreds of other hunters in my area how to do it.

Roger you hit on a good point and that is the area you hunt.I know some areas produce better bucks than others and a hunter must make the most of what one has to work with.I live in Louisiana and hunt private land but it is not prime land,I have in the past 3 years not shot any bucks less than 3 yeras old and I still not seeing any big deer,I did not even kill a buck last year and only one the year before, just have not seen a shooter, and a shooter in my arera is a 120 deer or up.I am not complaining just saying that if I was to hold out for a 140 or more I could be in for a long wait,in fact I have never seen anything over a 130.Louisiana does have places that have plenty of 140 plus bucks but I choose not to spend the big bucks to take a big buck. It's easy to pass on 120 -130 class deer if you see them on a regular basis, but it is a little different when hunting all season long and to only see 5 or 6 different bucks all of which are small, and our season is very long compared to some states.I think the point is that it does make a difference were one hunts and we should not pass judgement without walking in the shoes of the one being judged.afterall most of us hunt for enjoyment not meat or horns, although horns do excite me and I like the meat too.You are right though that one should not complain about only seeing small bucks if they are not being more selective about what they shoot, but it is different for everyone.

shoot what makes you happy and gives you good memories! With that said tho, I wont shoot anything that i dont think will gross over 140" and thank God my neighbors dont either! Just more of a challenge for me and if i need meat then I will shoot a doe.

If the stories about how hard it is to kill a nice buck in other states is true then I can kindof see why people there shoot small bucks.......but not year after year after year

Well first of all shooting does is not going to help boost deer numbers. Leave just a few bucks and they will still breed every doe on a place. Kill a doe and that's one less fawn born next year.
Exactly why does are off limits in my hunting area.. The area I hunt in had roughly 3 deer per square mile before the last couple of bad winters we had.. I am not sure what the ratio is right now but it has actually gotten worse.. If we were allowed to shoot does we surely wouldn't have any deer left to hunt. The bucks would clearly move out of here looking to find that lonesome doe to breed with.. So it clearly depends on your hunting areas..

I don't think some people understand how many different hunting conditions their are in the US. Some areas just don't hold as many deer.

Huntin for meat? the nerve of these lazy ham & eggers!

seriously, how many P&Y have you killed?. what were they? 125, 140, 160? whatever they are, its not good enough! you should have "raised the bar" and shot more, and w/ higher scores too, no excuse for not doing better than you did. laziness plain and simple

...pretty ridiculous huh?

Now a question for all you mighty bow hunters who point fingers; Have you shot a Pope and Young?? I have. Why do you shoot a compound?? That is a lazy mans bows. Why do you buy a bow period, I make my own??

Point is, when you feel high and mighty, you better watch out, there are those who will make you look a fool. Ive shot Pope and Youngs with my own custom organic bows/selfbows. Ive also shot big bodies spikes with my custom bows. Do what you like and feel comfortable with, and quite all the bitching and moaning about what others enjoy doing.
