Scent Overated????
 

Ok I have always done what I could to prevent/cover/eliminate/control my scent. But my Dad always asks hwo important it is where we live when you have a house atleast every half mile and scent from your house gets carried around. My woods that I hunt is down wind of the most common wind direction and only across 175-200 yard grassy field and I hunt in the woods and stil ltake care of my scent and I dont see tons of deer but I see enough to keep it interesting. For my scent control this season all I did was soak my clothes at the beggining of the season in a carbon solution then stored them in a plastic bin and then every 5-6 hunts ill spray down with some scent killer spray thats all I do. Last night I had a four point come in dead down wind and it was a nice steady breaze and even crossed my trail and never thought the wiser. What are your guys thoughts on this?

it depends. i always wash my clothes in scent free wash, air them out as much as i can, and spray down with scent killer on my way to the stand. sometimes deer will walk directly on my path to my stand and not know the difference, and sometimes the older bucks or does will smell you even if you're not directly downwind. I think it depends a lot on how mature the deer are, the more experience they have the harder it is to fool their nose.

No, scent is not over rated - IMO... If anything it's under rated.... For example, even urban deer that I've hunted seem to know where human scents should and shouldn't be....

Hunt a different place and see. Times when it doesn't matter so much and times when it does.

I was in one of those when it doesn't, sitting there getting bugged by something stuck in my sock pricking me. First time I've ever taken a boot off on stand, wouldn't you know it a doe being run raged by a buck busts out right under me heading out into the clear cut, both frothing at the mouth. I'm up with my boot half off weapon in hand waiting for her to take him out and she stops, looks right up at me, turns quickly and bolts back into the woods. I'd of bet she would've never given me a thought. Sure was exciting.

Nothing this year has seen me except her. It matters.

No its not overrated. A house 100 yards away blowing "home" scents downwind and you blowing human scent 10-30 yards downwind directly in the deer's core area are way different.

I always say, Will it be overrated when the biggest buck you ever seen busts you? It doesn't hurt.

I hunt in Western Wisconsin. Scent control is huge. With the bluff and rolling terrain, wind swirls like crazy. Its hard to play the wind.

Do everything you can to prevent scent but don't drive yourself nuts tryng so hard. Just don't go fill your truck up or go get something to eat on your hunting clothes. Lol

Yeah I definitly try to be scentless I was just wondereing how the rest of you felt.

Regardless of what you think of the importance of scent, why not just do everything you can to seem invisible from the deer...I guarantee you, your going to have better luck if they don't know your there or even have a hint your around rather than being only slightly alarmed. just my opinion. I'll do what I can to put the sneak on them.
