States Considering Banning Deer Urines - GOOD READ
 

This may not be new for some, but read this in my Outdoor News magazine. Interesting read, but 9 states are considering banning deer urines due to CWD. In the article I read, it said that a deer urine with CWD poured on the ground, the soil would be contaminated for 18 years !!! The other study shows that once CWD shows up in a state, it has yet to rid itself of it.




When the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department recently put out a draft of its 10-year Big Game Management plan, it contained a suggestion that Vermont consider banning the use of commercial deer scents made from deer urine.






The department argues in the plan that deer-urine based scents could -- perhaps -- pose a health risk to wild deer. In the draft plan, the department suggests that deer urine scents, which use urine captured from captive animals, has the potential to spread chronic wasting disease across the Vermont landscape. And for the record, captive deer facilities have historically had the highest CWD infection rates. Now, for the non-hunting public, the very idea of dousing the soles of your boots or the hems of your pants with deer urine might seem a little, well, whacky. Or at least stinky.
But for hunters, the use of natural scents is an important tool. Urine scents help mask the human smell and doe-in-estrus scents allegedly help attract the attention of rutting bucks. Some sportsmen downplayed the state's suggestion, feeling it a little over the top and rightly pointing out there was little science to suggest the deadly brain and central nervous system disease can be transmitted through urine.
Now, it turns out, Vermont hasn't walked out on this limb alone. Saskatchewan has already banned urine lures and a former Vermont veterinarian, who now serves as the wildlife veterinarian for the Pennsylvania Game Commission, came out last week in favor of banning urine-based lures in the Keystone State.
All told, nine states are considering bans -- and Vermont is one of them

Wow, I had heard some rumblings of this, but wasn't sure if it'd ever completely surface as an idea/law.. Do you know if WV was mentioned at all in this article as a state considering this? Thanks for the interesting read and answer in advance..

If it is true it would be a wise move I remeber seeing the results of that disease here its not a pretty site I will say that I cant count the number of piles of bones I found,it would be a shame to lose a healthy herd of deer over a bottle of ****,I havent yet used any bottled **** and I still see plenty of deer.

There is also alot of biologists who beleive its a naturally occuring disease. Herds out west have lived with it forever and are fine. They still don't even know how it is contracted for sure. Also something to think about is that cwd is probably in alot of places we dont know about and has been there forever. They keep finding new units in WI with CWD but guess what, the new units they find it in each year are units that have never been tested. Its nothing but a strain to elminate deer by the dnr IMHO. Colorado has had CWD forever. All the elk there congregate in the winter in the low lands and CO continues to have the largest elk heard around. There is no proof that cwd will destroy a herd. My honest opinion.... CWD is mother natures way of controling over populated areas and she put it in places for a reason..... What next they gonnna make it illegal to make mock scrapes. Also all the places they produce urine for sale is tested for such diseases all the time so the I find this all kinda rediculous. They have more problems with deer populations in the cwd units now than they did before they started tryin to rid the herds of it. Must be a really terrible disease, haha. WCL

Amen! It's just an excuse for the DNR to kill over population!

As a Vermont hunter I find it strange that the state has banned baiting and is considering a ban on urine based lures to minimize the risk of CWD but still allows canned hunting operations. :rant:

I thought IL was blue tongue and not CWD, especially in western IL. I know that down south, the blue tongue really did a number.
