Live weight of Buck?
2 Attachment(s)
I shot this buck on October 20th. I guessed his live weight at 250-260 let me know what you all think. I just got the meat back today and received 140 pounds of meat.

Id say your pretty close. They have charts for field dressed weight and measurements you can use in the future.

140 pounds of meat is a ton! I almost can't believe you got that much back...100 pounds would even be a lot of meat. Its a great buck regardless of his weight though.
|
I'd have to guess less then 250lbs from the pics, but since you got 140lbs of meat back i'd have to say ya.... about 250lbs LOL
I think its about 60% of live weight you get in meat so 250/140x100=56% |
The best I have ever got is 40% deboned meat of the DRESSED weight. Using that formula your deer would have to dress out at 350# . Something doesn't add up.

It has been my experience that no more then 50% of the DRESSED weight is the return on packaged meat. So from my experience, if you got 140lbs then that deer field dressed 280 with the live weight being clsoe to an additional 20%. Not saying that there aren't deer that size, I just did not see a deer that size in any of the pictures. Curious, did you actually weigh the meat or count out the packages??? The reason I ask is that all of my tickets I have gotten show a weight on it. That is not the weight of the meat, but the weight of the dressed animal. Like I said just my experiences. |
I asked the processor how much weight I got out of him. He is an older amish guy and he told me 140 pounds. I think I will reweigh it in the morning myself and let you know what I come up with. I thought it was alot myself. I looked at some charts and they said 139 pounds of meat would be a 280 pound deer. I don't believe he was quite that big so I am going to weigh the meat. I will let you all know what I come up with.

He was a big boy. Had to help ManOfhTheFall (my dad) drag him out lol. Now, it's my turn to shoot a big buck, so my dad can help me drag it out lol.

Congrats on the nice Buck !!!! And a 140 lbs of meat!!! Wow that is alot....
|
you will never get as much meat back from the butcher as you will doin it yourself. from my experience
|
I reweighed the meat and I came up with exactly just short of what he said. I weighed it at 135 pounds.
|
According to the charts I looked at with 135 pounds of meat the live weight would be right around 300 pounds. I'm still thinking he was 250-260 though.
|
Does the meat weight include bones? Also, did they add any fat to make sausage or ground meat?
I wish I could remember the formula I saw once. It gave live, dressed and boneless meat weights. The 40% thing sticks in my mind though. Live weight x 40% equals boneless weight. If that is indeed correct, your deer weighed 350 on the hoof. I'm not saying one way or the other, and that deer is real nice, but I don't think he'd go 350 live. |
Most processors will add in 20% fat to the meat...that would be 28 pounds if you got 140 back. Simple math puts your actual weight of meat at 112. Much more feasible for a deer the size of yours...size huge. Nice deer. My guess is that you had 110ish pounds of meat with 20% fat added in.

it barely looks 200 lbs to me live

I agree! Something is Not right:s4: Dan |
I think I have found the discrepancy. He did add in 14 pounds of pork which gave me 121 pounds of actual deer meat. So, add that up and the weight according to the charts show 120 pounds of meat = 267 pounds live weight. Still alittle over what I thought but much closer. I guessed between 250-260.

My small 7 point last years weighted 130 pounds hanging weight. I got between 40 to 50 pounds of meet. In my experience, with all the deer I have ever shot, it been just under half the hanging weight is what I got for meet. I never add any fat.
