refletching
would like to know what is the best way to clean the old fletching off the shaft.I' ve been told to use a sharp edgeand then a dull edge.what works for you?I see in the books an arrow stripper a tool that you push on the shaft and it removes the old glue and vanes/fleathers.Is it worth the $$ to buy one or not?

RE: refletching
I use a razor knife held almost horizontally to the shaft then rub the surface down with alcohal.

RE: refletching
Just refletched about a dozen arrows today.
Used a semi-dull knife to remove the old fletching. Be careful if you use carbon shafts and dont cut into the shaft. Some of the old glue will still be on the shaft, but Acetone will easily remove it in a few minutes. You can buy Acetone at any Wal-mart. Wipe the shaft down with 90% Isopropol alcohol and your ready to glue on new fletching. Takes me about 20 min. to prep a dozen fletched arrows for new fletching. |
RE: refletching
I' ve got one of those " Fletch Strippers" that Cabelas and Bass Pro sell and it works really well. The blade is curved like the shaft and works nicely

RE: refletching
I picked up a Zip Strip tool made by Duravane to remove vanes and feathers. I also remove wraps with this. Works great! Haven' t gouged a carbon shaft yet. After vane/feather removal I scuff the shaft using steel wool and then clean with denatured alcohol. So far so good:D

RE: refletching

RE: refletching
just make sure that you dont dip the shafts into the acetone.. especially dont let them sit if you have nocks on.. weakens the nocks and eats away at them
