Default Clover food plots how tall should you leave them over winter?

Im wondering how tall you leave your clover food plots over winter?Im in Southern Wis. and a friend said not to leave to long or snow may mat it down and choke it out.Another said leave long but had no reason why.Any solid advice from experience or knowledge would be great.........

Generally it's a good idea to leave it long. It reduces stress on the roots. If nothing else, the growth will help hold snow which insulates the ground and reduces frost heaving the roots out over winter.
