Great job on the recovery.
The eyes can deceive you. Everything happens so fast at the instant of impact that it is hard to see, and harder to recall after a few minutes go by. You see many of the guys that film hunts go back to view their film in slo-motion, so they can be sure about a hit/miss, or to decide whether or when to track.
A good lesson - as long as there is blood to follow, follow it.

Not sure the "use the right pin" is the lesson here. You said very steep angle, 11 yards on the range finder. "
Combine these two and you get a less than 10 yard shot. Most bows a 10 yard shot with a 20 yard pin is close, the "very steep" part I think was the issue. When you bend things to get a good sight picture with a steep angle it is very hard/impossible to keep the nice "T" form we all have on flat ground. The end result is usually dropping the bow arm down rather than bending at the waist, this often times results in a higher than expected impact point.
It's something you need to try to see how it effects you and how much.

This was brought up on another site as well.
I just went out and shot a bunch of arrows just be sure... and yes.. I consistently hit 3" high at 11 yards when using my 20 yard pin. (I don't have a 10 yard pin, I just aim 3" low)
I also shot from the treestand in the yard with the exact same results. No matter how I contorted, the results were the same. (as a note, I don't use a peep sight, I use a hind sight so I don't think bending any particular way would change how I look through the sights)
3" would have been a big difference on this deer.
My arrows are 368 grains with a speed around 210-215 fps. (If I remember correctly)
