RE: Instinctive compound shooting with a release

There is no guaranteed ethical shot. Two seasons ago a doe was walking broadside from right to left. At 30 yds in front I stopped it and took the shot. The deer jumped the string and spun around and ran to the right, I saw my fletchings take off to the Left. Upon getting down and looking for anything, arrow, blood, hair nothing so I followed where the deer ran and about 35 yds away was the deer and my arrow sticking up to the fletchings out its butt. I hit the deer in mid turn hence the reason why it looked like my arrow veered to the left. One of the cleanest kills literaly Iv' e ever seen. No blood Trail and the deer didn' t make it far at all. It started out as a very ethical shot and turned into a lucky shot.

That' s a fine idea. I used to practice " low light/twisted peep" shots when I used a compound by moving my eye to the left of my peep. Diligent practice is the key so you can learn HOW to do it, as well as what your limitations are. My practice paid off one year when I drew back on a small doe and realized that the overhanging limbs I was standing under created a shadow too dark to see my sights. I quickly switched to " backup aiming" and released when she walked past at 10 feet.

Perhaps the nay-sayers just never given diligent (or any) practice to shooting without sights, and/or are so reliant on them that they just cannot imagine shooting accurately without them. All I can say is, try it!

I now shoot selfbacked wooden bows, and all my shooting is done through split-vision or instinctive techniques. It works for me. I' ve learned my lesson with peeps and no longer use one...or at least if I do, I' m sure to use one that' s just very, very large. ;)

TFOX, that' s really a built in 20 yard sight aperture for under-the-chin anchoring, cleverly disguised as a " character bow" . :D

Very kewl bows, AK!
