Thermacell works???? worthwhile???

Any opinions out there? thinking of getting one for early season hunting. starts in a few weeks here in WI.

bigangrychicken 08-25-2009 12:16 PM

works great. They make a dirt-scented pad, as well---great for cover scent.

NJ/PAbwhunter 08-25-2009 12:26 PM

In the early season here in Nj we can be out there in mid September... The skeeters are really bad and the Thermacell keeps them away from me. Takes about 10 minutes from the time I light it until they are gone.

triggertrav 08-25-2009 12:33 PM

but, do you still see deer with it on?

GMMAT 08-25-2009 12:34 PM

Does the dirt scent pad also repel insects?

densfbs 08-25-2009 12:42 PM

I do not have experience with the dirt scented pads but I do know the regular ones work great and yes I have seen deer as well as shot deer with it running. Would not leave home without one for any outdoor activity including hunting.

I asked this question last year. and didnt get one negative reponse about it. ran out and got one. glad i did too.

All, I know is I hunt blackwater swamp in MD. Its the nastiest swamp north of a Lousiana Bayou. Two years ago, I littlerly thought my buddy needed to go the hospital. His whole head was swelled up, and arms. I bet he had 500 bites on him. He didn't see on sika because of all the arm flinging he did fighting off the bugs. I used pure deet and it ate the face of my ironman watch. And I even got ate up. My other buddy did't have one bite and had a thermalcell. From now on, I don't go into that swamp in October without one.

I won't use one in your regular hardwoods hunting, but if its a choice between being miserable and scenting deer. I will take scenting deer anyday. We hunt for fun.

Ever heard of the Great Dismal Swamp???

Mine is strapped to my climber, don't hunt without it and yes, I kill deer with it on...

Todd Mcduffie 08-25-2009 01:57 PM

awesome it work!

110% it works

Oneshot7 08-25-2009 01:57 PM

I couldn't live without the dern thing in the early season here, Ill take my chances on the deer smelling it over all the bites and buzzing and the blood transfusion needed after you get done hunting.

BigDaddy12t 08-25-2009 02:02 PM

I wont go in the woods without one durring early season.

Nick Hull 08-25-2009 03:29 PM

For the past ten years i have hunted the same spot on the first day and always get ate alive. Last year i figured i would try it and see if it worked BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT! I never had one bite all year AWESOME! :s1::s2:

Goose 11 08-25-2009 03:32 PM

I love mine. Everybody I know hunts with one. It has never spooked any deer or turkeys that I've seen. You'll be glad you bought it.

Beezer 08-25-2009 04:04 PM

Had a small doe come out waving a white flag last year, asked if I could loan her my Thermocell. When I refused she just told me to shoot her.

Tarheel_Hunter 08-25-2009 04:58 PM

Absolutely, 100%, without question, without fail

I had two does walk 5 feet from me with it on. They did not seem to be bothered by it. I was on the ground turkey hunting at the time

WIbuckchaser 08-25-2009 08:46 PM

They are a must this time of year.

JoeyG 08-25-2009 11:02 PM

I agree with everyone else.. and I've had enough deer around me while using mine to know it does not spook them.

RIStrutStopper 08-26-2009 05:11 AM

I don't know how I ever hunted without one.

Diesel77 08-26-2009 06:13 AM

Without a doubt, great product that really works as intended.

hardcorehunter 08-26-2009 06:18 AM

Yep...they work,,,awesome product

Firehawk7309 08-26-2009 06:32 AM

I love my Thermacell. Never had any issues with it.

triggertrav 08-26-2009 07:04 AM

WOW - not one bad review.

NJ/PAbwhunter 08-26-2009 07:25 AM

Answer to your question, No. In my opinion I have never noticed deer to seem spoked by the thermacell. Good Luck,
DW

trkytrack2 08-26-2009 10:38 PM

One of the ten wonders of the world! Wouldn't leave home without it. Doesn't bother the deer one bit!.

burniegoeasily 08-27-2009 04:42 AM

They work great for skiters and most flys, but dont work for a flip on nats. I use one every year. Fighting nats is better than fighting all the other pests ontop of nats.

I wish to God someone would come up with something to keep the damn nats away.

ijimmy 08-27-2009 09:35 AM

get one you wont be sorry

RonPenner 08-27-2009 11:30 AM

not that you need one more comment but I'll give it anyway, fully agree with everyone else, here in Manitoba in spring when we hunt bears, it is absolutley unbearable in the bush without it, with it, i can sit in a short sleeve shirt and not get a single bite!!!

Todd1700 08-28-2009 03:57 AM

If you have skeeters in your area and it's still warm enough for them to be active when your season comes in then you need a Thermocell. Here in Alabama you can still get eaten alive when bow season starts in mid October. I do not hit the woods without mine. An absolute essential piece of equipment as far as I'm concerned. Within 5 minutes of firing it up I just never even see mosquitos anymore. And if deer notice it I have never seen any evidence of it. They only cost about 20 to 24 bucks depending on location and it's the best money you will ever spend.

Royalslammer 08-28-2009 06:26 AM

Wouldnt hunt without it!....from early deer season and turkey season its a lifesaver..havent seen the dirt scent wafers yet...gonna have to check them out

BowHntrRick 08-28-2009 12:24 PM

I hate to be the only one to post a dissenting opinion, but here goes: I think that, in certain situations, a Thermocell is over-rated. I hasten to add that the Thermocell definitely works AND that if I hunted in an area where mosquitos are bad, I would definitely use one. However, the areas where I hunt in PA, while there are numerous mosquitos in the early season, do not compare with some really bad areas that I have seen. The Thermocell smells bad if you have the misfortune of having the wind shift to blow the fumes in your direction, the Thermocell "output" is uneven: it will start strong and then decrease after an hour and a half or so, and it is considerably more expensive than bug repellent to purchase the fuel cannisters and repellent pads.

As long as temps are less than 80 I can wear long pants and long sleeved shirts, so it is only my face, neck, and hands that need protection. I find it easier, cheaper, and just as effective to use a small amount of bug repellent where needed and leave the Thermocell at home.

Love mine. Some of the hollows in NC can get pretty bad w/o one
