Which broadhead?
Well here goes. I have been shooting rage 2 blade for 3 seasons now. Had a bad experience last year so I am changeing it up. I used rocky moutain iron heads before that. Full metal jacket 400 at 58 lbs. Give me some ideas and why. Please no rage answers, because it isn't going to happen. I lost confidence in them and everyone know that you need to be 100% confident in your equipment. Thanks.

TeeJay, if I strictly went back to fixed blade heads (and I say that because I carry them along with my Snypers) there is a short list which I would use for now.
I still have many Muzzy 100 grain 3 blades, along with them I like Innerlocs, G5 Strikers and Slick Tricks. I've grouped them all successfully with my field points as well as Snypers and would have the utmost confidence in using them. One of these fixed heads above would be my choice when I return to the elk woods. I also hear fantastic things about the Shuttle T's. All the deer I've shot since 2001 have been shot with Snypers which sadly are no longer available since Rage started making 1.5" heads. (Same manuf.) |
I highly recommend G5 Montecs. I only recommend them based on practice shooting, and their simplicity as I haven't shot a deer with them yet. I started using them this year after switching from Rage 2 blades. I never had a problem with the Rage heads myself, but my friend who I was hunting with shot a nice buck in the shoulder (small branch deflected his arrow) and his head snapped in half in the deers shoulder bone. It only went in about 1-2 inches. Just curious, what happened to make you want to switch?

In case I haven't told you, Slick tricks fly where you aim, and kill stuff.:happy0001:

They don't make the ones listed above in 175gr....lol...so I shoot snuffers. The beauty of them is....they're easy to sharpen. They're inexpensive....and they're readily available. They also have a great warranty.
I actually wanted to shoot the Montecs. I bought a couple packs.......but I found out real quick how hard it was gonna be to keep them sharp. Good looking head, though. I swear....a lot of the fixed heads today look REALLY small. |
I have had great sucess with thunderhead 100's.
Can never go wrong with simplicity |

As far as ease of assembly, extremely sharp blades right out of the package and field point accuracy. G5 Strikers are tough to beat.

I feel like the odd man out, I shoot Crimson Talons. I loved them until last year. For some reason, last year i shot 3 dear, and neither bled much at all! Brand new heads even. Before last year, i thought they were the cats butt. Now I'm researching other opinions as too what buy as well. I think i'm leaning towards Rages for their big cutting diameter. Who knows?
Hey TeeJay, can I ask what your bad experience was? |
Ive experimented with a lot of broadheads over the past couple years. The best broadhead I can find is The G5 montec. Last year I killed three deer, two of which were with the same broadhead. One thing I look for in broadheads though is one piece construction. Ive had too many BH blow up and leave blades behind. One really nice thing about the montecs though is that they make a practice broadhead. Which makes it really nice.
|
I've shot the 125 three blade Thunderheads since they came out...
I've also tried the 125 three blade Muzzys...No problem with either of these from me... |
TeeJay, give them Snuffers a try. Excellent heads with a good cutting diameter to them. Been using them for 18 years or so, not one complaint yet with penetration and blood trails.

Being that I am not a fan of expandables (own reasons). Any well known cut on contact manufactures put out very good broadheads. I personally like new archery porducts thunderheads and their nitrons. Muzzy and slick trick just to mention a few more are great choices also. I can say after using thunderheads for the better of 15 years and never broke a blade. That means alot to me!
|
well im goin to tell u i had to go to the rage becuase my bow would only shot those broadheads straight. I love them and will never go back to anything else
|
I would say Slick Trick or Muzzy both are really good heads.
|
+1 on the G5 Strikers, very sharp and fly great.

never had any problems with the Muzzy MX-4...

Ok my experince with rage. First of I have shot and killed many deer with these I am not bashing rage. I have switched arrows also. I had a ginormas buck in at 8 yd. Nothing between us but air. I drew and delivered the arrow. Perfect shot but only got about 15 inches of penatration. I hit high but I had to he was in close down hill and I was 20 ft up. I think the arrow hit the curve in the rib and followed it down. I lost my 150" but on what I would call a perfect shot. If given the same shot I would put the arrow in the same spot. Call it what you will. I lost confidence in the combo and am switching it up the year. I went to full metal jackets just looking for a good bh for them. Thanks I'll check out the slick tricks.

125 grain 3 blade Muzzy's. made a marginal shot in the center of the shoulder on a buck years ago, the muzzy punched thru every thing and did its job. They got my vote.
|
if you like mechanicles you could try vortex broadheads. I am changing back to them from the rage. they are very sharp and strong. i also know a guy that has been shooting them since the early 90's and swears by them. he has not and will not ever shoot anything else as long as they are making them.
|
i have used thun derheads 125 grain for the last 15 years been great heads never had an animal get away from me with them yet
|
Mechanicals:
1) Wasp jakhammer 1 1/4" cut either 100g or 75g 2) Grim Reaper razor-tip either 100g, 85g, or 75g Fixed: Slick trick or Wasp boss bullet Wasp makes very solid broadheads. Kind of a sleeper if you ask me. They don't spend a ton on advertising or marketing, but they have a loyal following for users. |
100gr G5 Strikers- Very Sharp and fly GREAT!
100gr 3 blade Muzzy-Proven for many years,real good price,fly very well.Have taken allot deer with them. |
100 gr. Muzzy 3 blade, flies straight, kills quick

Magnus Stinger Buzz Cuts

Your broadheads are blowing up after hitting a deer:confused0024: Sounds like you might want to pick your spot closer to the rib cage:wink: |

I have heard many good things about the G5 strikers as well as the montecs, but I shoot the NAP Hellrazors. I shot a nice deer last year at 40 yrds and the deer didnt run 10-15 yrds and bled tremendously. I really like the new look of the NAP bloodrunners this year, but who knows, why fix what isnt broke??
|
100 grain thunderheads
occasionally 100 grain wasp boss bullets |
Steel Force
I guess I will be the first to throw Steel Force out there with the bleeder blades. I choke gripped my bow during a 20 yard shot at a black bear. I pulled the shot and hit him in the leg. The bleeder blade nicked the artery and he bled out. Lousy shot saved by the force of the Steel Force. Good eatin bear.
|
I like the Magnus Stingers at 24$ for 3 I think there the best buy.
|
My vote goes to thunderheads and muzzy both. I've had they best accuracy with them. And as far as preformance they do their job perfectly. I started out with ole razorheads. If i was a traditional guy I'd still pick that broadhead.
|
ive had great luck with steel forces, and thunderheads... heard lots of good about shuttle t's, slick tricks, muzzys, wasps, montecs, and strikers.
