Trying a new salt technique. Will it work?

I was told by this farmer to buy mineral salt in the bag no licks. dig a trench and fill the it with the entire bag, then cover the salt with loose dirt from the trench. Layout a small amount of salt to attrack the deer. Do you think this will work for this year? I always though you need to start this process early in the year and maintain it to change deer travel patterns. Should I waste my time and enter the woods again before the opener to try this?

Thanks for the feedback.

i hve done this many times only with trace minerals and so far i hve had no complaints about the hole that is dug up by the deer

If you put this somewhere near a known trail, the deer will find it. Our opener is less than 2 wks away so I would not go in to do this now - if you have longer it might be worth it.

Not sure where you are located, but is this considered baiting by your state?

I think that deer like pawing in the ground for mineral and salt so it makes sense to me.

That's how they get minerals from natural mineral sites (from the ground). So yeah.....that's actually preferred.

What I wouldn't do....is place a lot of stock on it being a great attractant....during the season. Around here, they're pretty much off minerals by the time the season rolls around.
