Are older bows to slow/loud with today's deer
I was just wondering what everyone thinks about this. With the bows of today slinging arrows hundreds of feet per second and as quiet as they do it can older bows still take deer even though the deer are becoming quicker and are still jumping the string. I dont know if you get what im saying but i tried to get it across let me know what you think.

Deer are now tougher than woodpecker lips. You must have a bow that shoots 300fps with axe heads screwed onto your arrows. Those old bows don't stand a chance in the woods with these robo-deer.

i recently had the pleasure of sitting down with a mature buck and sharing a danish with coffee. according to the buck, they are way too smart these days. infact the buck advised, unless you are shooting a dual cam compound bow that was purchased within a 2 year window and exceeding $700.00...it just won't get the job done. according to this buck, who wished to remain annonymous, deer of 5+ years ago were compared to cavemen by our standards. this buck also informed me that we (as humans) were uncapable of killing them with modern firearms unless it was with a magnum caliber.
i learned alot during this brunch and now plan on purchasing a Mathews Monster and a Remington 700 .300wsm |
I myself shoot a old XI IMPACT and I have no problems with killing a deer .It hasn't let me down yet.The farthest shot i've taken so far is 25 but I do practice up to 30 .

The trick to a deer not jumping the string is to shoot at a relaxed deer with a quiet bow...
Deer are no faster, smarter or tougher to kill then they have ever been... I killed them with a recruve back in the late 60s and early 70s... My first compound was a Bear Whitetail that I bought in 1975... I killed over 50 deer with that bow...My current bow is about 15 years old, I still shoot fingers so I can't shoot todays "fast" bows... I haven't had a deer jump a string in about 20 years... |
You mean you guys don't know the deer have a site they can go to and discuss all the topics we do? I mean they are already talking about the new camo patterns and saying what idoits we all are for believing that scent lok actually prevents them from smelling us.

I sure am glad that we finally have gotten to the point in technology that we can finally hunt deer. For the past few thousand years this majestic beast was untouchable, NOW finally we have 330fps bows that can kill them!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
|
i just recently heard from an ancient deer that all deers this fall will be wearing bullet proof armor so it's strongly recommended that we use armor piercing bullets.
...k.. i'll stop. Anyways, the human specie have been killing mid-large game animals with cheap bows for how many yrs now? ...tooo long.... |
I bet the traditional guys would love this post........:guiness:

My buddy started hunting with an old 1982 Hoyt he bought used, the year before I bought my new PSE in 1994. My bow shot around 230fps to his turtles pace of 171fps. Recently I have finally caught up to him, not passing him yet, in the department of tagging deer. He switched to a new Parker about 4 years ago and hasn't got one with his new bow. Moral of the story is #1 high percentage shots within your comfort zone #2 out smart deer...
So I would say NO to your question! |
"even though the deer are becoming quicker and are still jumping the string." Deer will keep jumping the string as long as people keep shooting at alert/on the edge deer.
Although come to think of it, maybe the deer are getting faster than a speeding bullet, quicker the speed of light, able to jump tall buildings with every body dumping out "c'mere deer", deer cane "black majic", buck juice, and n-raged feed all over the place for them to eat. |
I would have to say no to this qurstion as well. As long as the older bow is tuned up and the sight as well as arrow rest are still working fine. I see no issues with getting deer with it. I just retired my old bow this past winter. It was an old Bear Bruin and I have shot a few deer with it. As stated before as long as the deer are not real alert then it doesn't matter at all.
|
I promise you my sights are working well and my bow/arrow are tuned. I'm shooting 182fps and I'll report back in about 6-8wks and let you know if it's capable!:s1:

Ive been thinking, this isnt a question of bows at all. ITs a genetics question. As we hunt more and more we kill the dumber and slower deer off constantly, this leaves only the stronger, faster and more genetically superior deer. So as time passes we are going to have to constantly keep getting better technology. Sorry guys using traditional and old bows, but that fact is that ur not gonna be able to hunt the SUPER deer we have now.

LMBO !! Sorry for you! But up here with our low deer populations compounded with predators and even in some cases poaching and hard winters. show me a dumb deer.. Those old bows can still do the trick LOL! As I stated I just retired my old bow but I could still shoot deer with it.. I went for something lighter and with an easier let off while drawing it back more than anything else. I like the new speed of my newer bow but that really wasn't a factor to me.. If you grab a bow that is around 20 years old or so and grab one now there is a big difference though. But to say an older bow wouldn't work, sorry but it sure will..

This thread is hilarious.

Those bows killed deer back in the day and can kill them today. Actually, Im currently looking for an old Jennings Carbon Extreme for a back up bow.
|
My bow is 10 years old and it still kills deer!

The smart deer are still going to be a small percentage of the popultation just like im sure it always has been.
We are advancing technologically, but the deer are not just gonna start upping there anti b/c engineers produce better bows... Didnt indians kill deer with bows??? |
Having taken 38 Biggame (Deer, Elk, Bears) animals with recurves (45#s to 65#s) 1958 to 1975 & 100+ since with Compounds (Deer, Mule Deer, Black Bears, Buffalo, Elk, Caribou, Wild Hogs, Sheep & more) I doubt anyone should have trouble with SPEEDY ANIMALS...

Everybody knows
that with these marketing people, you have to catch these new fleet footed deer, with one of those $2000 compound bows, or you ain't in the race.
|
Honestly old compounds suck. And wasn't much faster than a decent recurve. They were so loud, it scared me when I shot a a deer. I litterly have gotten off two shots from my longbow, and the deer wasn't spooked at all. Well until that second shot went into his ribs that is.
You just can't compare older compounds to trad bows. One is quiet as a mouse and other loud as a gun. (well not that loud). Its not a fair comparison. Performance is about the same. I am shocked they were ever able to sell compounds in the 70's and early 80s'. Marginal performance increase with much louder. I guess letoff was a selling point. My first compound was a bear whitetail hunter, and I don't miss it at all. My second was a gem, a browning excellerator. |
Just silence your bow and the deer won't jump the string , it's that easy .

Whats funny is when I shot my Browning excellerator, all my freinds and I raved about how quiet it was compared to my bear whitetail, and now if you hear one of those excellerator, you wondered if I dry fired it. Everything is relative. |
Just wondering what you all think is an old bow. Is it 5-10, 10-15 ect. My browning is a whopping 6 and still shots true and is quiet as well. Trust me, I would love to pick a new bow but that just is not possible this year. I am thinking of changing out the string and maybe a new rest, crank it up a couple and shazam, it will be like new...
