RE: Broadheads
Joe,
What kind of bow do you have, what is you're draw-length, and what is the weight you'll be pulling. I can recommend a WHOLE set-up for you, but I'll only do that based on what you're going to be shooting, because it will change if you're gonna be shooting a 50# bow vs. a 70# bow. The only couple BH I think across the board are just absolutely fantastic for whatever you're shooting be it 50# or 70# are Magnus Stingers and Slick Tricks. There are many more that are also really good, but I've seen both of those work well with whatever set-up they were used in with well placed shots. If you're new to bowhunting and archery, you've got some work ahead of you, but it will be FUN work as well. 2 yrs after my first archery kill, I quit gunhunting for deer because I lost the excitement with a gun, but the bowkill still is the ultimate thrill. Post up a little more info, and we'll get you more answers. If you're shooting anything under 60# RAGES would be an ABSOLUTE NO in my opinion, too many LOST deer because guys didn't have the ENERGY to push that BH into where it needed to go. |
RE: Broadheads
Personally, Until you have a little more experience with a bow and learn all the set up and tuning tricks I would stay away from a mechanical broad head as if you do not keep up on them they can fail to open or at least not fully open and then you have a wounded animal out there, bow hunting takes and requires more from a hunter than what it does to go out and shoot a rifle. Practice, practice, practice!!! As OHbohunter said it can depend on what bow you are shooting, arrow weight and so on!

MUZZY'S

RE: Broadheads
13point..best of luck to you. I agree with the guys who say to use cut on contact (Muzzy's, Slick Trick's, etc.) broad heads if you are unfamiliar with the overall energy of your bow. I bet you get a good shot on a deer this year with that bow. Aim true.

RE: Broadheads
Of all the heads I've used in 40 plus years of Bowhunting. Slick Tricks are the Best I have ever used.
Great flight, Super sharp, tough as nails, and inflict major damage. I'm not sure what else you could ask of a Broadhead. Dan |

ORIGINAL: GR8atta2d I'm not sure what else you could ask of a Broadhead. That's why they make them all though. We have choices! I've went the mechanical route before. Dan |
RE: Broadheads
As you can see broadheads are really an opinion issue that a lot of people feel very strongly about. You could ask 20 hunters what the best broadhead is and get 20 different answers. Pretty much any of the major well known companies you see in cabelas or at your local bow shop have killed a lot of deer! The best thing is to try a bunch of different kinds and see what flies best out of your bow. Having said that I would start with Slick Tricks or Muzzy and stay away from mechanicals with a 55 lb draw.

RE: Broadheads
With lower draw weightrs (or any in my opinion) used a fixed blade head Personally I use ABOWYER heads (the Brown Bear) want to read why go to : tradgang.com/ashby
Its a lot of VERY interesting articles about WHY broadheads penetrate, and why the do not... its based on the laws of physics and not 'marketing words' and is definitely differant than the 'mainstream' thinking... even I was a lil sceptical at first... now Im a firm believer.... It's a GREAT bunch of reading.... read it, you will not regret it...and just may learn a thing or two (I promise that you will) Tom :) |
