RE: Have you ever dropped a deer in it' s tracks?

Bowhunting Biggame for 45 years I have had a few & all were quick deaths. 1 Back of the head (brain), 1 neck & 1 Big 8 & a Big 7 & 6 (center of back into chest)sniffing my scent rag & a 50" Caribou as he ran by me @ 15 yards (on video).
I still want the Double lung. good luck to all this season...

Friend of mine droped a 3 legged deer in its tracks last year. He shot it at 20 yards. The bow was set on 55 pounds. Dont know if it counts since it didnt have 4 legs to run with!

RE: Have you ever dropped a deer in it' s tracks?

The last two deer that I have taken with my bow have dropped in their tracks. The first was a white-tail that I made a heart shot on from 20 yards. He expired just as fast as any shot from a rifle. The second was a shot on a mule deer that hit him in the spine between the front shoulder and the head. That deer also expired instantly. Which was lucky because a spine shot usually requires the hunter to have to take a second shot. And it is usually not humane. I wasn' t proud of that shot though because it wasn' t where I was aiming. I think that hunters should strive for exellence in shot placement and making quick humane kills.

Even the worst of your descriptions is far better than what I' ve seen and see weekly. As a police officer I had to track down and kill wounded deer that have been hit by cars. Nasty, nasty, job. And last year I moved out into the country and have counted 29 dead or dying deer along a three mile stretch of road since September 15th. A spine shot is way more humane than an automobile. And just so you know, we Americans kill more deer with our automobiles every year than hunters do!

My first three bowshot deer dropped like a stone. I was starting to wonder what all those articles about bloodtrailing were for!

Yup two years ago I shot a spike buck through both shoulders and he went right down. I put another in him to end it quicker. But I was shocked he fell right in his tracks.

RE: Have you ever dropped a deer in it' s tracks?

Well I have had one with a bow, I spined her when she jumped the string, it was weird, she had both her front legs side by side, so when she went down she also went back which caused me to hit the tip of her shoulder blade which put the arrow into her spine. She hit the ground like I had shot her with a 30-30! I had to put a second one through her lungs to finish what I had started.

The other experience I had with spining a deer was with a gun, I did something I will never do again, I neck shot a doe because I did not want her to run because I already had a one mile drag as it was. Well I hit right where I was aiming and she dropped like a ton of lead bricks and never moved. I though " well you don' t get a quicker or cleaner kill than that!" . Man was I wrong, I climbed out of the tree and walked the 100 yards calmly up to her to start the field dressing and noticed she was still breathing! I am thinking there is no way that deer can be breathing, I put it right through her spine! Well even though she was paralyzed from the neck down she sure was, so I put one through her brain and the job was done!

Breaking or shattering a deer spine does not garauntee a quick humane kill and the look in thier eyes as you finish the job haunts you for a long time! It happens sometimes though, and when it does it is our job to finish the job as quickly and humanely as possible.

One buck and one doe, dropped imediately. Not intentional, just not a perfect shot. Cant explained what happened either the deer duck or I misjudged yardage.

Spined one doe, came down out of the tree and put another through her to finish. I was very embarassed to have missed so high. My buddies said that she must have dropped on the shot. I know better, it was a wide open shot at 22 yards and she was grazing, a very calm deer. She went straight down, I blew the shot period.

Twice for me I hunt high and both bucks where less than ten yards from my tree.
The second shots finish the job quickly but unfortunatly still a gut wrenching
thing to watch.
However the worst experience was a one lung shot on a doe. She ran a short
distance but still in sight laid down got up started stumbling around.
I had to get down from my tree go to her and finish her off. It was the worst
30 min. of deer hunting in my life.

Two one last year in the spine from a tree and one at 3 yards in the neck, I was on the ground for that one. Both fell where shot.

One thru the back of the neck, dropped, one 2-3 years ago I shot ,she kind of looked around (windy day) and kept on feeding till she dropped over.(thru the liver) weird.................................[&o]

I' ve dropped a few this way. Although this is definately not the prefered method,
it is highly effective. We are all out there to " harvest" deer and do it as humanely
as possible but if the shoe were on the other foot and the deer were doing the
shooting, does it really matter where you get shot? Dead is dead.[X(]

Several years ago I did. A combination of misjudging distance and jumping the string. Caught it right through the spine and it dropped, used a second arrow through the vitals.

Not what I wanted, but a quick kill and no tracking involved.

Yes, a few and the one was shot a little forward and high with a mechanical n the shoulder. Dropped dead in it' s tracks.

Never had one drop on the spot with a bow. Closest ran a semi circle around my tree and dropped 30 yards behind me.

The best buck I have taken with a bow to date died where he stood. Was a 5X5 with a 4 inch drop tine off the left beam. I had been watching him all summer, had him patterned on the feeding areas and put my stand up. First night in the stand he came down the trail just like he was supposed to and was feeding broad side at twenty yards. I had a major case of buck fever going, I shot him, I swear I saw the arrow hit him right behind the shoulder. There was a really loud crack and he hit the ground and didn' t even kick. I got down and my arrow was sticking out of his ear, right down the ear canal and into the brain. Not real hard to tell what I was looking at when I shot. I' m not proud of that but it was definately effective and humane.

I`ve shot many deer in spine, all have been right below me.I hunt thick most of the time.Every one of them drop were they stand.some twitch some did not.I beleve when when you shoot a deer with a razzor sharp broad head it does not feal a thing.[exsample] shot a doe once, ran about 10yrds and keap on eating.Did not feel a thing. bullets burn- razzor blades do not.that twitching is the nerves.they hemrage so fast they dont feel a thing.Plus I`m there to put meat on the table and a trofhey on the wall.I`ll take a spine shot or a double-lung,they both do the job.
The most humane way to kill a deer is with bow and arrow.

RE: Have you ever dropped a deer in it' s tracks?

well i' m going to have to disagree with you Bullsi - you said that they do not feel a thing.. you ever cut your hand?? you still felt it didnt you?? no matter how fast you cut it you still felt it.. Its all due to proper placement.. A bow an arrow is no more efficent than a gun if its put in the boiler room..

not aruging just disagreeing[&:]

RE: Have you ever dropped a deer in it' s tracks?

If the Knife is not as shrap as a razzor blade=yes.Iv`e been cut buy both at first I did not feel the razzor, the knife I did.I also been shot in the arm ,burn and hurt like hell. That arrow is going so fast and doing so much damage they dont feel athing and by the time they do feel pain its to late. Also when in shock ,you dont feel a thing. Now a misplace shot is another story. When you cut the spine all pain censors are blocked.

Josh_E 05-21-2003 06:53 PM

RE: Have you ever dropped a deer in it' s tracks?

well the bullet is going a lot faster than that arrow.. a lot more deer have been dropped in its footsteps with a gun that a bow. I dont believe that the deer doesnt feel one more than the other.. you ever been shot in the arm with a broadhead with a bow??? who says that wont burn and hurt like hell to??

bullsi 05-21-2003 07:20 PM

RE: Have you ever dropped a deer in it' s tracks?

Josh I agree with you.If that bullet hits in the right spot its not going to feel a thing.
Especially when you hit them in the spin. WE are talking about a spin shot? that doe I shot went through both lungs and kept on eating, before he died.Explane that. And I remember one time on the way back to the truck I shot a buck in the center of his chest. The arrow went through his larinyx-heart,he drop on the spot. He was between two small trees about to bolt. Thats why I practice so I can feel confindent about shot like that.Double lung-spine-chest all do the job.

RE: Have you ever dropped a deer in it' s tracks?

I had the spine shot experience, and he was stopped in his tracks but I had to sit there for 2 min. or so while he died. The upside of it was I learned (the hard way) that my string will hit the sleve of my jacket and make a huge slapping noise which will startle deer and result in such a crappy shot.

I got one down last year in 25-28 yards with my first hart shot.

Lesson learned

Five years ago I shot a doe at 12 yards while she was feeding on acrons. She just looked around and went back to eating. While I was trying to ease another arrow into position, she just dropped. I knew I made a good shot because I could see the arrow in the ground covered in blood. Darnest thing I ever saw.:D

RE: Have you ever dropped a deer in it' s tracks?

Ive done it twice; my first deer with a bow dropped from a bad shot, I was young;(about 12) it was a bad shot that I should never have taken. I learned a good lesson and chose my shots carefully after that. The second was a deer that threw her head to look at me at the last second. Her head swung right in front of her shoulder. Neither experience was fun, but both ended quickly; hope I can keep from doing it again.
