I did that hunt in 2000 or2001,Took a rifle and hiked the 5 miles off the road and my buddy and I both shot bulls. We could have shot bulls on the hike with bows but didn't bring them.Go to the alaska hunting forum ,You can find out all you need to know.

I've done this hunt in 2004 and in 2006. My biggest recomendation is to get away from the road. If you can hike in even a half a mile, you'll have a better chance of success. My biggest mistake the first time up was that I didn't stay in the same spot after a group of cows came through. If I had stayed there I probably would have gotten one of the bulls that came through a couple hours later.
The second time up, there were virtually no bou anywhere, so be prepared for that.

I plan on getting a ways from the road. I elkhunt in one of the toughest units here in CO so I should be fine. I'm all over the Alaska hunt forums, but want to get as much data as possible. Thanks for you insight!
