Scoring Turkeys
What is the best way to judge a turkey that is going to score well? I am traveling the locations and spotting several birds but it is very hard to determine which one would score better. For example, I save 4 gobblers today and they all looked identical. Last fall, I saw ~20 gobblers together and it was very difficult to pick out the bird that would score the best. I saw several large birds and full beards, but then I saw a few lean birds with longer beards.

RE: Scoring Turkeys
weight is a good thing and so is beard length.but if you can what you really wanna look for is spur length.

RE: Scoring Turkeys
If they come in groups I always take the lead bird or the one thats really pushing the others around. I figure he'll want the action before he lets any young punks take his hen.

RE: Scoring Turkeys
The lead bird is usually a pretty good idea but a couple years ago me and my buddy scoredon a double.he took the lead and i took the second mine had the bigger spurs and a double beard.
you can try to pick but the thing is you'll never really know how big the turkey is when he is puffed up looking for a lady. |
