New Bow or Not?
Hi Y'all. First I want to thank you for helping with my climber question yesterday as I think I have it down to 2 models. The API Grand Slam Bowhunter and the Summit Cobra. Now for a new question. I have recently decided to buy a new toy. I have been hunting with a bow for 8 seasons and am very pleased with my set-up. I have a Darton Excel that my old man bought for me when we first got into archery I love this bow for many reasons but most are sentimental. I am looking into the new "high end" bows in particular the Havoctec and the SQ2. I am looking for fairly short ATA and high IBO. These two seem to fit my needs but their tag is a little high. My father bought the PSE Baby G complete set-up from Cabelas last year and is very pleased with it so I am contimplating that as well. Any suggestions. Remember faster is better but not necessarily that important, Short ATA, light price tag. Why are there so many damn choices. This is harder than buying a new truck. Thanks in advance for your help.

RE: New Bow or Not?
Well, if you've been happy with the Darton... you should also include in your "try it" list the Darton Maverick Recurve. It is one smooth shooting puppy. It's super quiet... especially with some limbsavers attached.

RE: New Bow or Not?
Well if you put it that way......You're looking in the wrong direction.
The 2 fastest short ATA bows are both made by BowTech.....Both have IBO speeds around 320(The Tech29 will do near 320 with a 29" draw length) The "Tech29" is a 29.5" speed demon that has very little recoil and is very quiet. It is only available to a 29" draw length and has a 6.5" brace height. The "Mighty Mite" is 31.75" ATA and 7.25" brace height......and is super fast, has a little recoil and is almost as quiet as the "Tech29".....a decent stabilizer and some Limbsavers smooth both right out. They have a little bit more recoil and noise than the others mentioned (Hoyt,Mathews)with the same arrow weights....but they are considerably faster. The neat thing is that you can shoot either of these bows either at much lower poundages to get the same speed as the ones you mentioned (SQ2, HAvocTec).....OR you can shoot HEAVIER arrows as fast as the others shoot a lighter arrow and it will be hitting much harder.....and now they sound and feel similar with respect to recoil and vibration. Either way it's a win/win. Check out "JeffB"'s Report on the Mighty Mite in the"Technical Forum".....under the title "Oh My God....Another Bow Report Already!!!" This should give you a pretty good idea how the BowTechs stack up against the competition. By the way......I think you'll find any of the bows I've mentioned and the Hoyt and Mathews MUCH more fun and forgiving to shoot than the Baby-G. IMO the "Baby-G" is obsolete......there are a ton of bows on the market right now that will do what the Baby-G can do, only MUCH quieter, faster, and with a lot less recoil and with SIGNIFICANTLY higher brace heights making them easier to shoot. I had a Baby-G and compared to my Mighty Mite, it was about as much fun as a train wreck. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Edited by - Matt / PA on 01/23/2002 18:32:31 |

RE: New Bow or Not?
Bahhhh!!!
If you want a short Darton then go with the Magnum 33...:) I won't comment on the Bowtech....<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> As for the Havoctec and the SQ2...you are right, they are both expensive bows...no matter where you get them. Enter.....the Reflex Denali. There are a few places on the internet that sell it for betwen $330 and $350. It has a 34 inch axle to axle length, 8.5 inch brace height and a 295 fps IBO speed rating. The Denali is basically a 2001 Hoyt Havoc with ZR200 limbs and the Versa single cam. Low price, quiet, accurate, decent speed and very smooth to draw. Did I mention that the "Versacam" is extremely adjustable in terms of both draw length and percentage of letoff without the use of a bow press and without extra draw length modules?.....and it is available at the same place your dad bought his Baby G from for slightly more than I quote above.... ![]() Edited by - PABowhntr on 01/23/2002 18:47:36 |

<font size=4>HEY!!!!</font id=size4>.....you're just bitter that BowTech doesn't cater to "Freaks of Nature"! <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: New Bow or Not?
Matt,
You may be right.....that is one of the reasons I have never bought a Mathews. I hate when I look at a company's lineup and pick out a bow that has all of the specifications that I am looking for only to find they don't offer it in draw lengths up to 31 inches..... Darn Napoleonic-syndrome people!!! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: New Bow or Not?
If you are looking for speed and a light price tag, Mathews is not the way to go. For speed the bowtechs are deffinately up their. You also might want to look at the Parker Ultralite series. I deffinitely think you should look at the Darton Magnum 33, or the Proline Mountain bows, also made by Darton. When you are talking about fast the speed differences are not that great with the newer bows. Bowtechs are deffinitely faster, but not really that much when you boil it all down. And I don't know about where you live, but they are hard to find in my area. I'm not slamming Bowtech, I just think people get sucked in to easy by the speed thing.
