So MN is thinking about passing a tracking dog law. Never the less with puting my Shorthair down it is time for a family pet again. I am thinking about one of those mini tracking dogs. But I just dont remember what kind you had.

Wirehaired Dachshund. Man, I hope they pass the law in Minn. It's kind of ridiculous that there's any states that won't allow leashed tracking dogs.

TeeJay, Axel is a Wire Haired Dachshund. It's a very, very popular breed for tracking. They are tremendously talented dogs and Axel is our loving pet.

I'd suggest John Jeanenney's book, Tracking Dog's for finding Wounded Deer. John is the one of the foremost leading experts on tracking dogs in the U.S. as far as many are concerned.

The book is easy to find with a google search. Also, the United Blood Trackers.org is a great way to gather information and point you in the right direct. John as well as his wife is a member there as am I.

Awesome dogs! Got to see one on the trail this past season! I located Steve and his dog on UBT they came out and helped track my buddies deer! I was pretty shocked at the hefty price tag but well worth it! He was saying that its a LOT and he stressed "a lot of work" and he puts in more time in training and tracking than he gets to hunt! He also said he enjoys it bigtime!

i heard the those wired dashhund were popular. My father and i trained one of our jack russells to trail blood we would use him if it were legal......if it were legal ;)

It depends state to state as far as price if at all. There are many who track because of the love of it and the chance to work the dog. Many times all they ask is perhaps some gas money depending on how far they drive. Each state is different as far as regulations too. Like NY, the dog/handler must be licensed to do so and they can carry a weapon at any time to dispatch the animals when the shooter/hunter cannot.

In Maryland, a weapon cannot be carried after hours or out of season. PA will likely mirror that law. A bill has been in the process for years now and all but passed when some SOB Senator attached a handgun bill that nothing to do with tracking. Hmmppff, politicians. [:@]

Thats a cool pic Rob! Steve said he loves the tracking and working his dog. Remy is a great dog and was so eager to get on the trail he was shaking uncontrollably!!!!!! He came out late night and we were on the trail for hours and he wouldn't take a dime! I can't wait to see Remy on the trail again!

I only wish more people would look into it and utilize the services. Each year I post that recovery thread, each year we see wounding threads from states that allow tracking and yet most don't even try it. Usually it's free, even if it cost gas money all animals recovered from using dog services are so worth what little it might cost, if any.

Initial cost of the dog, Feed bill, shots, tied down and can't go on hunting vacations without a dog sitter, fleas, ticks, etc...it is just easier to shoot a deer in the lungs than buy a dog.;)

not that much ....around $400

They eat VERY little and there are only a few shots in their lifetime ... plus they make GREAT companions


there is a LINE for people to watch my dogs ... just gotta have real friends ;)


too easy to prevent ... and cheap ....so it's a non-issue

Unlike you, obviously, animals sometimes drop out of sight for everyone else ...

Don, I have had 1 or 2 dogs at a time my whole life. I have 3 kids and a wife. Packing up and going on vacation really doesnt happen any way. And Tony I am trying to learn something on these dogs, if you are looking for a place to shred Don and his thinking find some other place thanks.

Vars and I haveworked in Illinois for a couple of different outfitters for the past several years and we also do a lot of tracking in Ga. during the late season. We've been members of United Blood Trackers since it's inception, I do get paid as a guide when working in Illinois but not as a tracker. The tracking work is a labor of love that I take on as an extra and I would say that 99% of the tracker's you calldon't expect pay for their services.Vars and I havefound a lot of deer for the "double lung brigade" there's just something about a huge set of antlersthat can unnerve a guy. I'm trying tolearn how to upload pictures so I can put a few up. This might take me alittle while.

I want Axel to be bred however, not yet. I am not a breeder as I don't have a female. I didn't neuter Axel at my breeders request as they may use him but have not yet.

I can put you in touch with my breeder if you wish.

Axel is 21lbs. Here is a video where he did a dog show (for Dachshunds). He finished 5 of 38 dogs with an excellent rating.

Not much of an excuse really. I used that photo of the crotch armor for number 331 in the how far will it go number thread in the offseason. It must have been the last link I copied and when I thought I copied the link to Axel's show, it didn't and I pasted the crotch armor link and not Ax's show.....pretty funny but really, no real story. :D [8D]

P.S. Nice doggie. I had two Dachshunds at one time. They got their own personnality. They're fiesty little buggers but loyal as the day is long.

We got a dachshund for our kids for Christmas. Rob, you might recall me asking you about them in Dec. I figured if we were gonna get a little dog, might as well get one that can double as a great pet and a tracker for dad :DLOL, I haven't lost a deer in a LONG time....I hope I'm not jinxing myself [8D]


I bought the book Rob recommended, lots of good info. She's still only a few months old, but man what a cool little girl. Yes, she's not from an official tracker breeder, but dang does she have a good nose. I bet she does well in the long run. I've always had big dogs (I have 2 labs also) but boy is she a fun little dog. I would highly recommned one, even if its just for a pet - she's a sweetie. Here she is:

I was telling TeeJay on the phone, when the book was published it was may still be the only book written in English. It took many years for John to translate German tracking books. I consider this the bible for training new and older blood tracking dogs. It's a great read and even if your not interested in the tracking dogs, you'll pick up good tips for tracking in general.
