My dads Red Fox (Cross)

My dad lives up In northern Minnesota where there are allot of coyote's. Having to many coyote's around can really have a negative effect on his bowhunting whitetails up there. In the off season of bowhunting he's gotten Into trapping In the hopes of getting a few coyote's. So far he's gotten a few coyote's but the other day he got this very unique fox.

Cool looking fox Steve. Is it a gray-red cross? Is he mounting it?

Very cool fox!! I am guessing he is frozen solid in that pose. He should mount him like that:DMay not ever see one like that again.

Nope. It's just a red fox. The cross part comes from the black crossing each other on It's coat I believe. Yep, he's getting It mounted.

That's very cool Steve. Tell your pop congrats on that one! I didn't know they cross bred. I always thought coyote ate fox instead of mating with them.:D

Steve,

Congrats to your father for a cool catch! I do not feel it's a cross but rather a color phase. It's sort of like blonde, chocolate, black, and blue black bears. It's Mother Nature's way of changing her genes.

I don't think it is a cross between a fox and coyote, it is a cross between a silver-fox, and a red fox.

This is one my my silver foxes.

Actually it's a cross of the red color phase and the silver (black) color phase. I got a pretty good one during bear season that I hope to be getting back from the taxidermist in a month or so.

It's a cross Will. A cross fox doesn't mean a mix between a red and a silver or gray If that's what you were saying or thinking. In this case It's a "cross red fox" meaning It has a black strip coming from It's leg that crosses another black strip coming from It's head on top of the back. It makes a "cross". It's very easy to see. Kodiak Archer (Rob) said It perfect.

I'd say that's reasonable, although I never priced anything like that. I know my Full body Merriam Gobbler is costing me $475, and............................................... ................

My Full size Bear[:-]we don't wanna talk about that.

I actually thought It was reasonable too. I hear ya on the full body mount bear. I almost had my big chocolate done Into a full body mount but money was a tight one being I had just bought my parents house and business from them. The taxi quoted me $1200.00 9 years ago If I wanted the full body mount done. I wish I would of done It after seeing prices the way they are now!! I bet that price Is damn near double on a full body mount bear now!!:(

It's more than double. I got a lot of quotes close to that just for my fox. Ended up going with a guy in MI for $650 but then I hate to see what shipping is going to cost me!

Cool looking fox your dad got! Thanks for sharing, I do have to agree though that it does look like it has part of the silver fox color phase in it.. I was looking at a silver fox at our local rod and gun club last night during a benefit supper and it had a lot of looks as the one your dad had minus the red color.
It's still cool though no matter what..

The 3 of us will get together on a whitetail hunt yet. I'd love to hear you and dad swap buck hunting Idea's and tactics being you both hunt mature bucks allot the same way and have had good success doing It. It would be one hell of an adventure and learning experience for myself hunting with the likes of you both at the same time.

Cool looking fox Steve. I had a couple regular Red Fox in shooting range this year and let them walk. I may yet get back after them. Also had a completely blonde Yote in shooting range at the beginning of season. I should have never let him walk.[:@]

RE: My dads Red Fox (Cross)

Congratulations to your Dad, Schultzy... you probably know, but that's where I've been spending most of my time over the last few months (trapping and on all the trapping boards)... nice catch!

Be sure to check out other predators that taxi has done before... $300 or so seems pretty cheap to me, andthere are VERY few taxis who can get a predator's face right -- VERY. It'd be worth it to pay another $200 if you had to so it'd be done right the rest of your life and so you wouldn't feel like you wasted $300. Not saying that's the case, but I've seen a LOT of poorly mounted predators.

In fact, my own taxi firmly believes you shouldn't even be allowed to mount one for a customer until you've trapped for over 10 years and had all that time to sit down just outside the catch circle and study them up close and personal.

I understand what your saying Greg. It makes me a tad nervous too, I sure hope the price doesn't reflect his work.

Very good point here also!!
