08 mount back with jawbone UPDATED SCORE MORE PICS PG 3

Took this deer open day of archery season in NC. Please age the jaw bone for me. Not scored him yet will put a tape on him later.

UPDATE
Jeff/GMMATT and I ended our hunt early this a.m. thanks to a barking dog that busted me as I reached for my flashlight to chuck at it. Anyways we came back and scored this beast, lol, final tally was 119 1/2! He took the jawbone with him to have it aged. I'll updated with age when I know something official, I'm leaning towards 3.5, we'll see.

Brandon, that's a great mount. Congratulations again. I'm not a jawbone aging guy so I won't throw out a guess.

Maybe... MAYBE 3.5 but more likely 2.5. GREAT MOUNT!

The Taxi said he thought 4.5, I have no idea.

Hard to tell from the jawbone pics but It looks like there is some where on thattooth you go by, I can't think of the name of it but I have seen alot of 3.5's and that is what I would say it is 3.5

to be honest when I asked the taxi he sounded like he was taking a shot in the dark. When GMMATT comes up on Saturday he's gonna take it to his taxi and have it aged. He's a oddity for our area, I'll put it this was the taxi had 150+ deer to do and mine was the second largest to a 141" that he was skeptical was killed where the owner said it was? Who knows, he's a big deer for my parts and I'm totally satisfied with the deer and mount. Thanks for the kind words thus far.

Thats a great buck and a great mount congrats, I bet it was nice to go ahead and get your buck tag filled on opening day, that is a feeling I am envious of.

Congrats on a fine buck! The mount looks awesome to me. Are you planning on putting anything in the top of the pedestal, because it looks like a great spot to put a framed pic of you and your buck in the field. Just a thought. Congrats!

MOMighty - I do plan on putting in some habitat. The taxi that done it said he sucked at habitat LOL. I'm going to get some fall colored leaves orange brown etc then put a shed antler sticking out of the leaves.

Thanks guys for the kind words. Not a giant by any means but a super fine specimen for my area.

Thanks Rockin. After seeing his definition I'm suspecting he was juicing a little[8D].

Thanks NC. If you could see up close he has some summer orange on his back. If you look real close on the left antler (right if you looking at it) there is some velvet left hanging. I asked if he could preserve it and he did. Just adds character. Below is a trail cam photo from the day I killed him.

Very nice mount. The pics of the teeth are too out of focus to judge. Take a pic from the top of the teeth.

The best I can tell from the photo looks like he still has his milk teeth. But, its hard to tell. They loose there milk teeth right around 2.5 yoa.

Your picture angles are perfect, but they aretoo out of focus to see the necessary details. Here's a link that may be helpful for you to guesstimate the age: http://www.buckmanager.com/2007/01/19/age-determination-using-jaw-bones/

Keep in mind that tooth wear varies geographically. The only definateway to pinpoint a deers age to the exact year is the ring count method.

Looks great Brandon. I know nothing about jaw bones though...

That's a beautiful mount.I like how the ears came out too. I see A LOT of taxi's thatdon't do a very good job with the ears. He's a great buck anywhere, let alone NC. That'sawesome how you've got a trail cam pic of him on his dayof destiny!;) Congrats.

That is a gorgeous mount, excellent definition and his cape looks just perfect. Beautiful pedestal work too.
Congratualtions bud! Wish your taxidermist was close, you have already gotten back your 08 buck. Wow!

Great buck and great mount!!! If you don't mind me asking what part of NC were you hunting, who did the work and what did he/she charge??? If you don't want to post any of these answers please pm me if you would. The next good buck I get I would love to have done like this...if it isn't too far of a drive. Thanks.

RE: 08 mount back with MORE jawbone pics

I was hunting Alleghany NC. The gentlemen that done the mount Was Darryl Combs in State Road, NC Darryl's taxidermy. The charge was $355.

Thanks to all for the kind words.

Early, it is kinda cool. I actually rode my crotch rocket up to the farm around lunch that day just to check the camera and low and behold he was on there that a.m. All in all I had 9 different bucks come through that morning. I saw 8 of them that afternoon and he was the last to come out. My G/F missed one that would have given this guy a run for his money the next Saturday, the crazy thing is I drawed on him after she shot and let down b/c it was early in the season. Still kickin my self for that one.

Thanks for the info. That is a super price for that work!! I found State Road on the map just off I-77. Would you guess around 3 hrs. from Raleigh?? I already drive 1 1/2 hrs. from my home to the last taxi I used. His work was pretty good but yours looks better and about 1yr. sooner!! I think the last one I had done (2005) was between $325-$375 but I can't remember exactly. Once again thanks for the info. and that is a beautiful buck especially for NC. I think you guys in the northern and central part of the statehave bigger bucks than ours average here but we may have more numbers??

Wolf ~
3-4 hours give or take. If you ever need to use him shoot me a PM and I'll go with you. As for deer, I have a friend that hunts next to NCSU and he's killed some monsters. He has video from the stand where he let 4 different deer much bigger than this one walk.

Wolfpack 02-07-2009 06:29 PM

RE: 08 mount back with MORE jawbone pics

Yea I hear you. I live less than 10 min. from NCSU'scow pastures and ag centers ( off Lake Wheeler Rd.)and I have to watch some mooses every summer on my way home from work. Last Aug.I watched 8 bucks not 150 yrds. from the road and the smallest was an 8 pt. at least 16" outside and the largest was at least a 10pt. or better and at least 20" outside. I hunt in Nash, Johnston and Wilson counties and I would have taken any of those bucks! If your friend is hunting near that area he is VERY fortunate because there is NO pressure that I know of. Good luck in the future and posts some more good ole NC bucks;)Thanks for the offer and the info. I wrote it all down and put it away hopefully for future use.
