OHIO Late season Bow hunt
My wife gave me clearance for a late season (next weekend) archery hunt.
Price is right for 4 days around $1k, plus license and a 13 hour drive. Other than the obvious cold temps, although it's supposed to get warmer mid-next week and antlers starting to drop anything come to mind? Trying to extend my season some how!!!???? |
RE: Late season Ohio Bow hunt
Good luck Ed!! Nothing like last minute hunting!!:D

RE: Late season Ohio Bow hunt
Have you ever hunted the area before because a good arial photo would be nice? I have noticed deer herded up right now. Where at in Ohio? Good luck because this would be the latest I have ever gone out. Got some trail photos back from my place(s) and bucks are dropping their horns.

RE: Late season Ohio Bow hunt
I plan to head out tomorrow morning for a hunt. Its been REALLY cold. But seems to be warming. I think its in the 30's as opposed to -8 a couple days ago. No idea if I have a chance at a buck. I haven't seen much all year.

RE: Late season Ohio Bow hunt
Good luck Ed! Bring those extra warm clothes either way.;)

RE: Late season Ohio Bow hunt
Thanks guys!
Both of these outfitters seem to be decent and I have only called one of their references, so far. More home work for tomorrow They are located 50 miles N / NE of Newark. Anyone here of these two outfitters? http://www.bowoutfitters.com/ http://www.tripletoutfitters.com/index.html It's happening quick, which makes me nervous ![]() |
RE: Late season Ohio Bow hunt
yeah x2 on the warm clothes things. friday it was -12 here without windchill and with it it was -28. and when your in a stand it feels a lot colder. you should just come and hunt with one of us ohio people for free!

RE: Late season Ohio Bow hunt
Both of these places are in heavily deer populated parts of the state. The first link was in the Newark area but as you move south you get into some up and down parts of the state. The second place in Logan is some serious up and down so be in shape. I understand how you feel when you make a decision fast but once you roll with it dont look back. Let us know which one you pick!

I understand how you feel when you make a decision fast but once you roll with it dont look back. Let us know which one you pick! If I understand you correctly, are you talking about "up and down" meaning hilly terrain? If so, I will be stand hunting and other than to and from the stands I won't be affected by the hills Or Do do you mean sitting for hours without many deer sightings, which in turn means, your buttocks needs to be in shape? * So far, from some research, the preferred method is to sit on corn piles, as the deer will rather have an easy meal instead of digging though snow and frozen earth to get to the food source??? All the outfitters mentioned that it's hard to guess which trails the deer will come down if your on a crop field, but with the corn piles it's a little more stream lined, as one can imagine. Any experienced late season hunters agree or disagree? It certainly makes sense, just not my style of hunting, nor am I familiar with this corn pile thing.... I'm actually leaning more towards the outfitter that doesn't put corn piles out. Just stands set on his 1/4-1/2 acre crop fields, just sounds more natural.[&:] The other way sounds like fishing in a barrel, to an extent, my .02 cents! |
RE: Late season Ohio Bow hunt
Go get em Ed! I hope you nail a big one.

RE: Late season Ohio Bow hunt
Good luck to you but some antlers are already starting to drop.

RE: OHIO Late season Bow hunt
UPDATE:
We pulled the plug, mainly the antler dropping and lack of preparation made me gun shy. We are hoping to do this hunt around the 1st of 2010, with hopes of playing the odds on the antlers??? Thanks Gents! I guess I'll go golfing in March and start bugging my wife to go spring Bear hunting in New Brunswick ![]() |

RE: OHIO Late season Bow hunt
Ed good luck in Ohio! I hope you have a great time, and a safe&successful hunt. In my opinionifI had to pick one Iwould go withOhio Bow Outfitters. They are located in Coshocton County which was the number one county in Ohio for deer harvests in the 2007-08 season, with 8,417 deer harvested. Compare this to Triple T Outfitters which is located in Hocking County which recorded close to 50% less deer harvested(4,686) than Coshocton County! Without having a chance to do a lot more research and calling past clients, I would just have to play the numbers. Either place I'm sure is great as Ohio is really building a reputation for great whitetail hunting! Try to hunt close to either a known bedding area or a regular food source. Ask your guide if they bait overany of theirstands (corn, licks, pellets, ect...) as baiting is legal in Ohio. I also have a lot of pictureson my trail camera of deer (bucks) moving between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. So don't be afraid to hunt the late morning and early afternoon, as the warm sun gets them up and on their feet!Best of luck to you and let us know how it goes!

(New England) hunters... Hopefully they weren't relatives:D. This guy did not bait, but has his 1/4-1/2 crop fields in place solely for archery. I think he said that he had 156 stands set up on over 4k acres and he does this full time. I liked the idea of the crop fields verses baiting, as it seems more natural (imo).. Thanks again folks it's been helpful ~ Ed |
RE: OHIO Late season Bow hunt
Where I am in Ohio the antlers are still on and generally are through most of February. However, I have found antlers shed in other parts of Ohio in early January, so it is somewhat of a toss-up. I sure hope your hunt next year is a great one!

RE: OHIO Late season Bow hunt
Late season Ohio bow hunting has been good for me the last couple of years.
This year Jan. 13, last year Feb. 3. All racks were on tight... love hunting in the freezing cold. Refreshing, crisp and makes the hunt very memorable! I'm not going to deny that I can't wait to get to the house to sit in front of the old Grizzly wood burning stove! ![]() |
