Winds on the farms I hunt- opinions.
 

This is in reply to the odor eliminating clothing thread. These two farms are the ones I bowhunt the most. The yellow is stands, and I have them lettered for reference. I'll list what direction I normally see deer travel. These two farms are flat, with levees that help funnel deer in certain spots.

Yellow dot- stand
Yellow letter- stand reference-
blue- flooded for waterfowl
red- border




Stand A- no personal experience. You'd think that in the mornings you'd try to catch them to the bedding (all of the surrounding woods) and in the evening you'd want to catch them going to the food.

Stand B-Any direction, depending on where the duck hunters are.

Stand C- All directions here too. There's a shelf right along the river, that the deer travel heavily. The stand is on top of a levee so that you're looking at both sides of the levee.

Stand D- Deer can approach from any direction. Great morning and evening spot. I don't think there can bea good/bad wind for this stand.

Stand E- No personal experience.

Stand F- No personal experience. Deer are funelled here because of the oxbow pond to the west, and flooded beans/corn to the east.

Stand G- Every direction. I doubt there's a good/bad wind here too.

Stand A- Deer can come from every direction, except southeast. They are funnelled between a ditch to the west, water to the south, and a ditch to the north. This stand is on a levee. Field to the north is flooded, and has duck hunters on it every day of the season. The deer feed in the field at night. Mornings- any direction except southeast. Evenings- every direction except southeast and north.

Stand B- Same story as stand A. It's on a levee. I actually forgot to fill a part with blue, the water comes all the way up to the stand from the southwest. Mornings- any direction except southwest. Evenings- any direction except southwest and north.

Stand C- Any direction. No good/bad wind here.

Stand D- Every direction except west.

Stand E- Every direction.Most likely no deer travelling west to east/east to west though.

I have some stands where Im in the exact same situation...During the rut, I tried to always stay on the down-wind side of a doe bedding area, but for the rest of the year I just tried to hunt the prevailing wind as best as possible. But I understand what your saying, there's a ton of situaions where the deer can and do come from every single direction. Looks like an awesome property, lots of pinch points

Looks like some good spots Rory. I like A, E, F on the first property, but you know I like the field edges. Just can't help myself.

Where you looking for advice of any sort, or just demostrating your stand placement?

Ahhh I see. Well my advice may not improve your sucess any[&:]but I'll still try:D

I like A and E with a NE with

And F with a South wind

First farmI like B or C along the river. My question is where do you enter these farms from (park the truck)?

If at all possible, I would hug the river as close as I could with out falling in for my entry, and either cut over to the stands or hang a stand on the river edge. Hunt these stands with any type of West wind, and your scent is carried across the river, to a place where you don't care who/what smells you....with the river at your back you won't be "backdoored" by any deer either. B seems to be a pinch point between the field corner and river, I personally like this spot best without ever seeing the farm.

You could try a Germ approach and use a small john boat to enter your river setups, silent and scent free....maybe a little crazy:D, but it seems to work great for him.


Remember, my advice isn't worth much though, I'm still learning too.:)
