The Wensel brothers
Did anyone catch them on the Outdoor Channel yesterday? I think the show was called Mossy Oak Classics or something like that. Best thing about the show was no advertising on the bow they used, arrows, broadheads, Camo, scent, etc! These 2 guys by far were my favorites to watch when It came to hunting video's. They are also Traditional bow hunters, nothing to fancy with these guys. They did shoot a nice buck or 2 as well.

RE: The Wensel brothers
No..but I met them at the IA deer classic a few years back and attended a seminar they put on:D

RE: The Wensel brothers
Two of the best guys you could ever meet. Also probably the 2 best whitetail hunters you will ever meet.

RE: The Wensel brothers
I watched it, I'd like to hunt with em.
|
RE: The Wensel brothers
I got to meet and talk with them a few times over the years, good people. Guys like the Wensel brothers, Bob Fratzke, Rodger Rother and a few othersopend the door and tookthe whitetail game to a new level.

RE: The Wensel brothers
I met them about 20 years ago at a Holiday Inn, they were doing a seminar. Very nice guys and had some impressive trophies even back then.
|
RE: The Wensel brothers
I got a copy of Primal Dreams for Christmas but I have got to watch it yet. I've got a lot of respect for them.
|
RE: The Wensel brothers
I watched it a couple of times, it was great because Cuz was on the camera duties. When Barry made that PERFECT 22 yard shot on the monster you can here Cuz in the background saying it was an amazing shot. One of the guys that was with them them, Biggie Hoffman tells some of the story on Barry's shot over at Trad gang in a similar thread! I agree Steve, I liked the no this and that advertising of the products they were using, straight up hunting, I enjoyed it!:)
I'll be watching October Whitetails again today as well! :) |
RE: The Wensel brothers
The IA Deer Classic and the IA bowhunters Association banquet brings in some true hunters. Check Adams was real cool and I BSed with him a bunch one afternoon. I asked him if his wife cared that he went on so many hunts. He replied that he was single. I said, "No wonder you always have that huge grin on your face." My girlfriend didn't like it but Chuck sure did. I noticed in my kill pics this year that I was wearing that same huge grin, and I just had a Chuck Adams year myself, just in a smaller style than he does.:D

Schultzy, I watched it yesterday I love those guys!!! Did you see that buck they shot It dropped like it was spine hit just fell over but when they were by the buck they shot the hole looked like it was a perfect shoulder hit?? Crazy but a great buck either way!!! Walt

RE: The Wensel brothers
The show was great. They were a riot. The thing you probably like about it best was they're doing it the right way. They're just having fun. No damn fist pumping and that's what I'm talkin' about, just having fun and it shows. No staged stuff as far as their comments and actions... just having fun. I recorded it and when I get disappointed in some of these other "TV Stars", I'll replay it to get a feeling of being back with some real hunters .... "Having Fun".

I didn't read all the replies, I know I'm suppose to but I can't imagine anything off color here as I've never heard anything bad about Gene and Barry, I think they are ambassadors for bowhunting.

RE: The Wensel brothers
The Wensel Bros are the real deal! And that Roger Rothhaar (I believe that's how his name is spelled) ain't no joke either. These guys are BIG buck killers!

RE: The Wensel brothers
I have the October Whitetails. Love it. Kinda reminds me a little of the BloodBrothers style. (Except for the Trad part) I love any videos/people who are willing to teach something of value concerning bowhunting. So many TV Stars out there that learned from these guys and never give them the credit they deserve.

RE: The Wensel brothers
Hard not to hold these guy's in high regard! I have all of Gene's books. They approach it the right way.I met them quite a few years ago at an outdoor expo.Very friendly,Barry looked like he was up to some thing even then.

RE: The Wensel brothers
Yup, why anyone wouldnt like these guys, would be hard to understand.. I grew up with Gene and Barry, beings that they lived just about 4 hours from my place, they were the ONLY guys I knew of that published quality whitetail bowhunting info on hunting the kinds of terrain and habitat I hunt. Norther Western Montana (not mistaken for central and eastern montana much different)is a lot like Northern Idaho, so I would watch everything they produced back in the day and read all their articles and the books they were featured in.. Like the old classic, "Whitetails BowhuntingMasters"

RE: The Wensel brothers
I can't imagine how may hunting videos ( now DVD's ) I have watched in my lifetime, but Bowhunting Oct. Whitetails I and II are still my favorite of all. I love it when Barry shoots the buck ( the one that is blind in one eye) that they moved with a 2 man drive. It is the most amazing shot I have ever seen on video. It is running full speed by him, and he pulls up his recurve and drill it right behind the shoulder. An amazing shot. Then when they recover the deer, Rick Blase(sp?) is just drooling over it being such a perfect shot, and Barry says no it wasn't, I was about an inch off. Then they started making fun of the fact the deer was blind in one eye and that is how he got it. There was some hilarious stuff in those videos. Anyone who has seen them will never eat a watermelon without snickering ever agin.
I met Gene at a Whitetails Unlimited seminar in Ft. Wayne , Ind. about 18 or so years ago. It was incredible. That guy gave great tips and info, but man he had the place rolling in laughter all night. He had a story about using ziplock baggies to pee in that was hilarious. Afterwards I bought his book Bowhunting Rutting Whitetails ( great book) and a Whitetails Unltd. hat to have him sign. I was alot younger then, and kinda in awe of him. I asked for a hat, and he said "What size?". I stood there like ,UH UH... and he started lauging and said, they only come in one size ya dumb ass!!! :DEveryone around was cracking up , including him. He signed the book and the hat, and when I went to pay, he only charged me for the book and said that the hat was on him. He said the kick he got out of the look on my face was worth the price of the hat. We talked a while then and he was really a cool and down to earth guy. I agree that some of these yahoos on video and TV need to watch footage of these guys. Class acts all the way. Also, Primal Dreams was one incredible DVD. It definitely captured the whole essence of hunting. |

RE: The Wensel brothers
Man I have all but given up on hunting videos. I occasionaly turn to the Outdoor channel or MAn channel as it was called at one time on Direct TV. When its a hunting show and not some infomercial its cut up with 90 percent comercials. It drives me crazy to watch a guy in a tree stand or stalking finaly seeing an animal coming in then cut to 2-3 minutes of comercials, come back and rerun most of the footage and talk about it or have loud music blaring over it, then the shot ......and break for another 2-3 minutes of comercials. Then back from the break and another replay maybe and a couple minutes of the comercials again.........BY this time I'm agrevated and have the channel changed and end up missing alot.
I haven't seen The Wensel's videos but I know about them from Trad gang. I'd like to see them sometime. The rest are too far gone for me. The Truth series used to be good.. no music over and I could ignore what advertizing they pushed on you....but like I said thats along time ago. .... |
RE: The Wensel brothers
Another one that cracked me up was when he was having a discussion with Cuz about the proper pronunciation of Acorn. He was saying it WASN'T "A-kern" as Cuz wanted it to be. It was simply A-corn. He finished with something along the lines of.... "and we're have Kern on the Cob tonight for dinner". LOL

RE: The Wensel brothers
This thread got me thinking back to my old Bowhunting Oct. Whitetails I & II videos, and I do mean videos. I bought them both back when DVD's were'nt even a thought yet. I thought that it would be great to have them on DVD, so at 2 in the morning I got on Ebay and found the DVD of both 1 and 2 together on DVD. So naturally, I couldn't resist myself and it is on it's way to me and should be here this week. Only$11 shipped. Can't beat that.

RE: The Wensel brothers
Yea, I DVR'd it. Good show. I also like watching them on Masters of the Barebows.

RE: The Wensel brothers
Hate to crash the gush party, but I'm not a huge fan of the Wensel's. I guess they are alright as far as the celebrity types go.
I bought Primal Dreams and thought it was ok. I think I only own two or three videos because I can't stand the advertising most people push in them and I also don't care for the kill, kill, kill "snuf flicks". Thus, Primal Dreams was enjoyable. I didn't care for the way they harvested "Woody", sending a "shed hunter" into his bedding area to flush him by them. It sounded like the shed hunter did ont have a valid deer license and by Iowa law, every member participating in a deer hunt must be licensed. Now if the "shed hunter" had a valid deer license, then it would make it more of a legit drive, IMO. Then, I bought "Come November" by Gene Wensel. After reading it, I didn't feel I had really learned much about bow hunting deer. The chapter on leasing kind of grated on me, as I'm not a big fan of the idea. At least Gene states that some won't care for his opinion and that is just what it is, his opinion, fair enough. I read an ad for an upcoming Sportsmans Banquet in the area. I was kind of excited about it until I read that one of the Wensel's was the speaker. Maybe I should go and listen to him and see if he comes off better in person. I'm obviously not enamored with them now. Maybe I'll take Come November and get an autograph.[&:] |
