Wolverine...gotta be.

RE: Cross fox or what?
Red fox
|
RE: Cross fox or what?
It has to be mixed with something I think. Red foxes don't get that big in size.
|
RE: Cross fox or what?
Red fox.
I agree he is just all fuzzed up(heavy coat). |
RE: Cross fox or what?
I don't think it's a fox, I think you either have a color-phase Coyote, or an all-American "Best Friend." Snow looks to be a few inches deep back where it's at, which makes the legs look shorter than a coyote usually looks, but the TAIL is not what most FOX tails look like around here. I'd bet it's a 'Yote or a Dog.
I'm just not seeing THIS tail on that animal in that pic. |

RE: Cross fox or what?
OHbowhntr- Thats far from a dog!;) I've seen a ton of fox from the northern states. They are much bigger looking then fox down south and have much, much more of a winter coat then what you are use to seeing down south.

RE: Cross fox or what?
red body, black legs, and what appears to be a white tip of the tail, poking out from behind the tree (hard to tell in the snow) has red fox written all over it....legs are skinny compared to body, which to me would indicate a heavy winter coat. Tail doesnt appear to look any different than any other red fox.

RE: Cross fox or what?
I must not be seeing it right, because it looks much more like a dog/yote tail to me. I agree, it appears "fox-like," but indeed, it's and ENORMOUS FOX if it is, and that would be one heck of a pretty fur.

RE: Cross fox or what?
Definitely a red fox. Darker color phase maybe (like a cross), kind of hard to tell if it's shadowing or actual pelt color.
He's a nice one for sure. Here's a pic of classic cross color phase.(for you guysthat aren't familiar withthem)They're more common up north. ![]() |

RE: Cross fox or what?
Ah, thanks but I didn't take the picture. :)
And for more useless trivia for the day. They are called cross foxes because when you look at the pelt the dark fur going up and down the back and the dark fur on the shoulders forms a cross. ..Now you know... :D |

RE: Cross fox or what?
There is no doubt in my mind it's a cross fox. We caught several just like that one over the years. Cross between red and silver. Here is a pic of one I caught and had mounted.

RE: Cross fox or what?
There're not called cross foxes because they're a cross of anything. It's the pattern on fur. [:@][:@]
They're a color variant. A recessive gene just like the silver or black coloration. A litter could have red, silver and cross phenotypes. |

Wow you can sure tell who posts without reading the whole thread.[8D] I need to look no farther Christine and Kodiak Archer's posts. Nuff said. ;)

RE: Cross fox or what?
Slice your bread anyway you want. The fox in my pic. is the result of a silver variation of a red fox mated with a red variation of a red fox.[8D]I just had a long conversation with a fur buyer. He told me that people raise fox and breed color patterns to get a unique color that no other fur raiser has. If silver fox are red fox (I don't know this) they have been bred to poduce that coloration. (like a pure bred dog) I saw some real cool "chocolate" colored silver fox hides. Anyway, the pic that Noah put up is a "red" fox with a very dark color pattern.
