New archer just starting out...

I've been a gun hunter for a long time & am looking to get into bowhunting since I am moving into the country where I will have time to practice. I'm 6'1" 220lbs. What would be a good bow to start out with, trying to keep the cost down? I do want to be able to hunt deer with it, mostly from a stand.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Im a new bow hunter my self. My tip would be to go to your local reputable bow and gun shop and get your self a good quality used bow. I got a Hoyt intruder raider which is like a 7 or 8 year old bow in good condition and it did not cost much. The full setup with a tune up and new carbon arrows cost me around $300 and I love the way it shoots its very quiet and accurate. good luck on what you do but I know you will love bowhunting

Welcome to the wonderful world of bowhunting!
I daresay that it does not matter what brand bow you get.Pretty much every bow manufacturer that has been in business for a while has a bow good enough to hunt with. I would say go to a bowshop and shoot as many different bows as you can, and pick the one that fits you best.

I was in the exact same position as you about two weeks ago. I've gone to three shops and shot probably 20 different bows. I am going to make my purchase tommorow. I've decided on the Hoyt Powerhawk. It is about $479 new and I loved the way it shot for the price. The only bows that felt better to me was over $800.

Good Luck. I can't wait till tommorow.

If you are looking for a Lower priced Hunting Bow you could Not do any better than the new Ross Carnivore. It is simply said a very smooth shooter, that aims and holds like a rock. Diamond also has some lower priced Bows that you should shoot, as well as the BowTech Sniper, and Swat.

If on the other hand $$ is not a problem then try shooting all the New Center pivot bows you can get your hands on. The Admiral will No doubt be Bow ofthe yearin many circles.

Just curious? Did you shoot the Ross Carnivore?

I did but for some reason the grip didn't feel comforable to me. I also like the history of reliability that I have been told goes with the Hoyt name.

Nothing against the Carnivore as that would be a fine bow and not suggesting the Powerhawk is the greatest thing ever. My point was simply that I shot a lot of bows before I made a decision.

Just Curious! I have shot the Hoyts as well as the Reflex line. I was never impressed with the Reflex line at all, but I do respect Hoyt and they do make some nice bows especially this year with the Alpha Max. It is probably their best bow in the last few years.

Sometimes shooting a few bows in a shop does Not give one a true feel for the Bow. I have been as radical as to buy flagship bows from 4 manufacturers, and weed out the one I liked over a couple of months, but that can be an expensive process;)

Thanks for the advice. I have 2 "local" shops & one sells Hoyt & the other, Parker. I was really hoping to keep the whole set-up cost under $450. Do you guys recommend used bows? If not, why?

Thanks again!
