Not the way I wanted it to happen...The 10 pointer is dead

Well, its sad that it had to happen this way but the big 10 that we have been seeing all season long is now hanging from the tree behind our house. It all started this summer when we got trail camera pictures of him. We knew he was a good buck, but also knew that he was probably only 3.5 years old so we decided to let him walk another year. He must have known we made the decision because he decided to come by us and our trail cameras on a regular basis from that day forward. I had him at 25 yards second day of MO season right at last light. We then saw him numerous other times in person and on the trail cameras.

We even had him come by at 25 yards through our foodplot last Friday.

Tonight, my buddy Nick came in town and we decided to go out and try and shoot a few does. Before we got in the stand, i wanted to check my trail camera that is only 30 yards away. What do you know, there was serveral pictures of him on the 29th of November in broad daylight.

Anyway,We got to the tree and I climbed up to the top. When i got to the top i look over about 35 yards and see him laying there. He acted like he hadn't even seen me. I got Nick's attention and then saw him try to get up, then watched him fall back down. He was hurt bad. We got closer to him and decided that we needed to put him out of his misery. Both of his right legs were broken and there was no way he was going to survive. It is such a shame to see a deer of this caliber die before he had reached his full potential. He is a very impressive 3.5 year old...i can only imagine what he would be at 4.5 years.

If there is any good in this situation, its that he is in our hands now rather than the coyotes.

Still bummed,

Mike

Wow...just imagine tryin to walk with both of your bones sticking into the ground supporting you instead of your feet! i cant even begin to...

Atleast you got to him before he just sat there and suffered....Its a good thing you got to him first.

Congrats on a Fine buck!

Wow that is horrible that he was having to walk like that and that he was able to survive. I would have done the same thing and not let him suffer any more, too bad it had to end for him this way.

Tuff luck for that buck. Was he near a road or did he make it a ways from where he could have been hit?

By the way, what is your guys buck count from MO this season? I know you have had a ruff go of it after the Total Package went down, just wondering.

He was probably a quarter mile from the road...maybe a little farther.

If you count that buck, thats our 5th MO buck this year....Shawn and i have yet to legitimately kill one though...

Mike, hold your head up high buddy. You guys did the right thing. It is a shame though. He is a beautiful young buck with a lot of potential. Unfortunately, this stuff happens every once in a while. There is no shame in what you guys did. He'll make a beautiful trophy.

I remember a while back I came across a nice buck lying in a ditch during archery season. He was busted up pretty bad from a car. Myself and another guy put him out of his misery. It is definitely better than seeing them suffer, thats for sure.

Kudos to you and your crew.

Whether it be a buck of this magnitude or a little forky......what a tough way to go. I am glad you and your buddies were ale to end the suffering.

Stuff happens.Nothing we can do about it. I think if you do this hunting game long enough a similar thing will happen to us all. I watched 4 bucks all summer long once. I shot the 10, the big 12 got killed the night before season opened by a car, the big 8 was jack lighted and left and the 6 pointer got killed by a car. All 4 gone within a couple weeks. Really bummed me out even though I shot the 10.

You're right, buddy... he would have been an absolute TANK next year... darn good this year.

Amazing he made it a 1/4 mile from the road in that condition.

Dang Mike, i hate hearing it ended that way but you guys did the right thing in my opinion. Beautiful buck, and its just good that you guys found him and was able to do some good for him, dying the other way would have been an ugly death.

That is still a beautiful buck. Bummer he had to play in the road for sure..
