I had a big buck standing on a trail I was watching one time and he finally took a step toward me and stopped. He paused for a minute then took off the other way..... fast. I thought, "what the heck happened?". Seconds later a pair of dogs came through and got on his trail and began baying(?) as they started trailing him.
Whose fault was that?

I haven't filled a tag this year and my prospects to do so don't look good.
1. My fault for for getting on my lease so late. I had to find a place to hunt that I could afford. I could have been scouting public land, I held out for private and when I got it I didn't have much time to scout. Its a two hour drive from home.I could have used vacation days to scout, I didn't. My fault.
2. I had a shot at a doe. I misjudged distance and shot under her TWICE. My rangefinder was in my backpack. NO DOUBT, my fault.
3. Another shot opportunityat a doe. My release grenaded while drawing. My fault? Maybe, I chose that brand of release. I had drawn the bow upon getting in my stand with no issues.
4. No shot opportunities at bucks that were legal in my county. (Minimum 13" inside spread or at least one unbranched antler). My fault again for lack of scouting preseason. I did do some low impact,(I think), in season scouting and found a good looking area after the rut. I have high expectations for that area next year.
Losing my lease last year due to the owner selling the place hurt me this year. I had a problem finding a place to hunt that I could afford. I don't know of a single private property that allows "free" hunting. It was a bump in the road I had no control over. I did get permission to hunt another property 4 hours away from home. My fault for not being willing to make the drive on a regular basis.

I agree to a point. While yes “technically” you didn’t put yourself in the right position and then capitalize on the opportunity, you can still hunt the way you are supposed to and pick all the “right” stands and just not have fate give you that opportunity. When it comes down to guys who head into the season knowing they most likely will only have ONE chance at a good buck all year, they need a little luck on their side. I don’t think it’s an excuse so much as that’s just the way it is.
Now if you are blowing chances, spooking deer, not paying attention to details, not putting the time in the woods, then yea, there is only to look in the mirror. But if you have valid reasons for stand selection based on deer behavior, sign, knowledge and experience…play your wind directions, stay still on stand, take scent precautions and smart routes in and out, and STILL don’t get it done. You just had fate give you a raw deal. You can’t WILL a deer past your stand, you can only put yourself in the best position that you feel is available. After that, it’s up to the deer.

First of all I feel there is always a greater power involvedthan what I can control, so 100% soley ones fault,I dont think so. The majority of fault oh yeah.

I don't agree totally. There are many things that we can contol. If one of these things cost us a deer then it's our fault. there are many things we can't control. How can we blame ourselves for them?
If you suscribe to the "it's always your fault" theory then I believe that you would also have to believe that if you aresuccessful then it's all your doing. I don't believe that eithor. Example: I break every rule of good hunting and afox bumps a huge buck up and he runs under my tree and I shoot him. Was that my doing?
Her's another example: I go hunting with Schultzy. The night before, Steve gets me real drunk. I'm so hung over the next day that I missa big buck. THAT"S STEVES FAULT![8D]
