Hunting the same spots.....

Its funny you should mention this. I just updated my log book lastnight since I am done for the year.
I only have one 15 acre chunk of land that I hunt.
I have 6 different stands on this land.
35 sits this year
Stand #1........5 sits
Stand #2........6 sits
Stand #3........4 sits
Stand #4........2 sits
Stand #5........5 sits
Stand #6........5 sits
I moved 2 of the stands once thruout the year, so..
Stand #7........5 sits
Stand #7........3 sits
Total hours on stand........93.5 hours
Now before someone says something, I know .... that is only an average of 2.67 hours per sit.[8D]
Deer sightings
16 bucks
20 does

I think more along the lines of TEmbry. I'll hunt a stand as many times as I want if I don't think it has been compromised.
If a deer is going to avoid an area because of human smell, is it better to 5 human smells in an area or 70? I'd think that with the commotion of moving around an area and setting up 70 different times might have the deer avoid the whole area altogether, rather than skirt a stand by a few yards.
I hunt some of the same stand locations a lot. If one of my stands has been comprimised I'll know it. Deer skirting around the stand or no sightings at all. Then, obviously, I won't hunt it. But, if the deer are still using the trails I'm hunting and acting like they don't know I'm there, I'll keep hunting it when the wind is right.

I agree with this. Permanant stand sites are the way to go weather you use a climber or have a fixed stand. (IMO) My spots are picked stratigically way before season starts. I want to move thru my woods as little as possible. Kind of like a fly on the wall.

I'd like to hear your views on deer patterning hunters....and how you think hunting the same spots won't contribute to that, more adversely.

You may sway me to your side.....and I'm ONLY giving a dissenting view. I'd love to further discuss this with you.
Thanks.

I am close to 30 sits thus far. I would have to say I have sat in 27-28 different trees/locations with my climber. I sat 3 times consecutively in on tree over a 3 day period when I saw 10 different bucks, but no shooters. Then the action died down.

For me....
8 different sets. 5 or 6of them are pre-rut sets that I alternate between through out the season.
2 of these are rut stands (last two weeks of season) I'll sit in those buggers every day.
By seasons end....1 missed buck in archery, one dead doe and one dead buck in rifle season. All from my rut stand.
I agree that spooking deer while going to and from a stand is very bad. I'll also agree that stinking the joint up isn't all that great. However, I still feel way too much emphasis is being put on scent while going to and from a stand.
Case in point. Last week, during rifle season, I was sitting in my "rut" stand and watched a 6 point walk directly under my stand, by me, and then proceeded to sniff every footprint in the snow where I walked in. Never bolted, looked alarmed or anything. I do not wear knee highs. I just drown my boots in scent killer before leaving the truck.
Keep your scent down as much as you possibly can. Get in plenty early and stay late. You'll be fine.

I'm fortunate enough to have my own land a total of 250 acres. I have 30+ sets to choose from. Most of them are set by the end of August or never come down. There is minimal disturbance durning the bow season. I might relocate if I see something change or get busted in a set but thats it.

You are absolutely right. However, if you use the wind and take different routes to the same stand, you'll keep it alive longer too. Unless you have the same wind day after day, you should hunt different stands according to the wind. I don't think that I've ever had more than 8 or 9 different stand sites during a season.

WHen you go to the same stand day after day at the same time and the same way in the deer know where you are going and when. They can pattern you just like you try to pattern them. So if you pay attention to the wind direction when you walk in and use a differant route and have multiple stands in the same area for differant wind directions you should see your success rate go up. This is my opinion it may work for you it may not but it works for me in my situation.

Is morning/afternoon 2 sits?
If yes, In PA, probably something around 27 sits, 9 different trees and one ground blind. 1 buck, 1 doe. Buck on last sit.
In IL, 10 sits, 4 of them being all day, 6 different trees. 1 buck. Buck on last sit.

I usually go into a stand I sit all day. Sometimes I may switch stands mid-day, but usually not. I rarely hunt any one stand location more than 4 to 5 times a year. Depending on the location.
Some can be hunted a little more with No harm and some you need to hunt less because of the difficulty ingetting a perfect wind to hunt that particular spot.
