I never see anyone on the forums talk about these
Price wise.. I really like these ameristep strap on steps. Put a linesmans belt on, throw these over your shoulders, and just strap them on as you climb. I notice no one talks about these on the forums, but they work gr8 and are very safe, and a lot easier than those screw in steps. Plus these are legal on public land as they don't damage a tree. I have used these many times and I like them alot. Lone wolf are my favorite,,but a lot higher priced. These are so versatile compared to a lot of different steps, and simple to use. Any of you on the go, portable hunters that don't want to spend the $$ on Lone Wolfs, I recommend these..awesome bowhunters tool IMO. I let a buddy use my LW sticks and stand for a few days this year and I used my Millenium and these and I forgot how gr8 and easy these things are. If I couldn't use LW's..these would be how I portable hunt.

RE: I never see anyone on the forums talk about these
Used them for my 2004 season a few times HCH.
And when I say few.. I mean like twice. I got over-tired and sweaty in seconds after putting up 20 of them for one set. That sucked. I still have them in a rubbermaid container in the garage. Use them as a LAST step sometimes.. but other than that. I found them worthless. |
RE: I never see anyone on the forums talk about these
I use them as foot rests while using a Guidos Web when on camera duty. They work like a charm. I have always had a problem with getting them cinched down real tight though, which has made me leary of using them to climb up. Great little steps though none the less. I never bought many due to their costs vs screw ins, but if I did same day setups, these would be a possibility.
On a side note, how do you like your Millenium stand? Im thinkin of gettin one before next season...how is the comfort in these? |

RE: I never see anyone on the forums talk about these
Kinda pricey, id just buy a set of LW sticks first...would be a good backup though if you had some laying around.

So you would say that a LW is MORE comfortable than a Millenium? I realize it isn't as lightweight or "versatile", but even the comfort is less?
Just asking honest opinions, I want a quality lock on for next year..and have always heard Milleniums can't be beat for comfort. Have you ever used the Summit Deer Deck or Deer Deck Lite by chance? |

never tried them. stick ladders are much easier. about 5 straps and your 20+ feet up. and i yes, i know your arguement "oh, but they are heavy to carry all the way out into the woods" my reply, suck it up. If you shoot a deer, it's heavy too. That deer isn't going to grow wheels when you shoot it. which brings me to my next point. the deer cart. put your ladders, stand, corn, whatever else on it and wheel it out and set it up. you can get a lot farther in the woods when your pulling a cart instead of carrying stuff.

RE: I never see anyone on the forums talk about these
I used them and had the buckle screw up more then once. Used to think they were great until I almost fell. Had a safety harness on.
I started using them when they came with a black strap and then they changed the buckle design, had them slip and amerstep said they were having problems with them and replaced them, this was at least 8-10 years ago, so they might have fixed the problem by now but I'm not risking it. I bought some more after I intially had the problem it was the ones with the design your pictures shows and I had the same problem again. That is their third design. Yes I knew how to use them in case some one going to question me on that.;) I use some of the old ones to hang my bow or gun on but that's it. |
RE: I never see anyone on the forums talk about these
When this was going on there was a lengthy thread on the Bowsite about the slippage problem.
I was saying "no way they are great" went out and got more of them and had three of the batch slip on me. At one point I had about thirty of them. |
RE: I never see anyone on the forums talk about these
I too prefer stick ladders. I can get a 20 ft stick ladder for 35 bucks from Sportsmans Guide. It may bend them, but Ive actually used em on some pretty curved trees, they can bend more than alot think, and still go back to straight when removed. For economical NON same day setups, there isnt a cheaper way to get 20 ft up than $35 stick ladders, unless you are a tree monkey with clearance screw in steps placed strategically. 5 minutes tops setup....they would be perfect for same day if it wasn't for weight. Im betting some lighter aluminum stickladders would work awesome, but they are up in the LW price range, so at that point why not just get a LW.
I can pack in a hang on 5 sticks, and have them hung in about 7-10 minutes depending on the tree....and the catch is I sweat LESS than if Im using a climber...I HATE climbers, never have been good or comfortable with them. I am noisy, and nervous climbing with them. I think its cause I had the bottom slip out about 15 ft up when I was first learning to use one..luckily dad was there to lend me a ladder to get down (I was like 12 or 13)...ever since then, I haven't been comfortable in them. I will use them when the need arises and they arent a problem much anymore, but I 10 to 1 prefer hang ons. |
RE: I never see anyone on the forums talk about these
HCH....sounds like you like them and they work for you. I've never used the strap on steps, but have a friend that uses them and likes them too. I always used screw ins but I hate them too! I bet I have 100 out there still in trees. I went to the 20' sticks, and overall I am pretty happy with them. There are certain spots thatLW sticks, or steps would definitely be better, but most of my sets have straight trees, so I'm usually ok with the stick ladders.
TEmbry....Ihave the Millenium, love it. I will agree, it would be the absolute BEST stand ever made it if had a self leveling platform (in fact why don't ALL stands have this feature?you'd think they woulda caught on by now:eek:) but overall, I love it. If I was gonna be really mobile (like huntingdifferent sets all the time) its probably not be the best stand. However, I set up most of my spots prior to the season (with 20' sticks also) and all I have to do is take my stand to whatever set I want tohunt, and climb up. If you get it make sure to buy extra receivers, that is the ticket. I have 10 which makes it nice...gives me 10 sets, and I only need 1 stand. Hanging the receiver is easy, and once it is up, there is no easier stand to hang - you just slide it in. Obviously comfort is a no brainer. You can sleep in it if you wanted to. pm me if you want details on where to get it at a really good price I have used several hang ons. Honestly, I hate hanging or setting up any of them, unless I am putting a set to leave a while. I don't know how you guys that set them, hunt from them, and pull them the same day do it. Personally, thats when I use my climber. My main reason for getting the Millenium was comfort for all day hunts (most every stand will wear on you after 4hrs) and to be able to have a ton of sets with only 1 stand. |
RE: I never see anyone on the forums talk about these
I keep getting pmed on AT from guys wanting to know if I know anybody selling these on the forums as they want some. Those of you that don't like them..guys are wanting them. Post up on my thread over there saying you want to sell them or pm me and I will be the middle man.

RE: I never see anyone on the forums talk about these
I am one that maybe interested in taking these off the hands of the users who do not like them. Let me know if you are interested in getting rid of them and what price you are looking at. Thanks

RE: I never see anyone on the forums talk about these
They have them at Gander Mtn. for $12.74 per 3/pk

RE: I never see anyone on the forums talk about these
why not just use the screw-ins? they are cheaper!

I use mine on all of my lock-on stands but only for the first 3-4 steps. I just remove them every time I leave. I can't remember who makes the ones I have but they are the type that has the rope inside another rope with a loop on one end and you cinch it tight. Haven't had any problems yet (knock knock). Been using them a few years. Makes it a "little" more difficult for someone to "use" or steal my stand and I do emphasize little.

I prefer the Cranford detachable Tree steps. Screw them in once a year and your done just clip them on and off. With extra lags you can setup several stand sites.
It works very well for me. Quick up and quiet too!;) Dan |
i use them now, they might b a little high but they are super nice. ive never had a prob with them and will only use them no. i hate the screw ins
|
They're band here, just mentioning them can get you into some deep dodo. :)
Everything has a place, can't think of one for them right off hand but thanks for the heads up. |
whats band, screw ins or the lock on latters
|
I'll use them for the first 3-4 steps or for hanging my pack .

Those single step-strap things seem like too much work while climbing. With the LW steps you get 3 steps with just throwing 1 strap around the tree.
I personally use the Summit bucksteps though. They're slightly heavier than the LW steps, however; two feet can stand on any single step which makes hanging stands much, much easier...and with two feet on the top step, while climbing, allows me to position my next step higher up the tree than if I had my feet separated by 12'' (or so my logic tells me). And this is all not to mention when the winter comes, me and my cold feet with giant PAC boots on really appreciate the larger foot platforms offered by the bucksteps. |

Well. You can call me an outlaw call me whatever you want to, just not rachel. Anyhow, I use the screw in steps on public land. I spoke with a wco about it and he said its not that they damage the trees, because that's not the issue they're worried about. Its the people who leave them in trees after they're done hunting a spot ect. I know a lot about timber and that type of stuff and I know that one of those going through a sawmill assuming it gets past the metal detector would be catastrophic. We're talking a minimum of 10,000$ damage. So, every time I use them. They stay either till I'm done hunting there or till the seasons done. Then I remove them. Its that simple for me. Sorry I break that law but there's another one I break occasionally aswell. And its not exactly a horrific one either. It boils down to a responsibility issue.
Don't get me wrong, I know its not a good thing the right thing or something you should do but I do it. And I'll probablly end up with a fine for it but. Walk it off I guess. Ryan. |
