UV on clothes
 

I can't say I have bought into this UV thing in the brighteners on cloths.

But I have one friend I hunt with that got a bunch of new duds this year. He has constantly been complaining that deer are just walking by and then look straight up. He claims its only been a problem this year. I still wear the same ole clothes i have been for the last 8 years.

I am beginning to think these deer see the UV in the clothes. Anyone else buy Anti UV detergent?

If I could the search function worth a damn I'd dig up a thread from a while back. A lot of good information on this subject.

I'm not sure if I but into or not. I haven't been busted this year? Maybe my clothes don't have UV brighteners in them? I don't know? Maybe I don't want to believe it so I don't have to drop the cash on new camo? Not sure. Interesting subject, for sure.

Yea, it sucks they have basically made use jump thru firey hoops to do a search.

RARELY... VERY RARELY have I thought I was busted for anything other than moving at the wrong time or stink or something. I've never played a Statue and had deer come unglued. The whole UV thing is pretty much a sales gimmick to get your bucks I figure. Well put it this way, I never bought a UV killer, I've never done anything to kill UV[8D] and I've shot deer kneeling on the ground from as close as 7 feet. I really don't worry about UV.

I had deer busting me in my stand on day I wore my new suit from Bass Pro shop. I would just get a blb light and check new clothes you buy. If they glow in the dark; then send them back. A light doesn't cost that much money or take that much time into checking your new clothing. I wouldn't go out a replace all your current hunting clothes. You should do a search on ifish.net or archerytalk.com. There is tons of science to back it up. I posted a ton of websites on those hunting forums for people to read up on the facts and science.

Ok, but a black light makes the clothes glow. We know a deer see's in the UV spectrum. But that glow you see from your black light is not in the UV spectrum, because we, humans cannot see in the UV spectrum. Its just an indicator that you have UV brigheners and such.

If it is indicating that I have "UV brightners and such" as you said; then does that not mean deer and elk would see it also. I will try and post my info for you to read; if you are really interested in it at all.

Dave Smith you have a good point. It was opening weekend for archery and the deer have not had pressure, since last hunting season. I never had any problems other years. My treestand is around 15ft in the tree. I may try the UV killer sportswash. I just hope it works like they claim. I have heard some people say that it works by only dimming the UV reflecting dye and not eliminating it. I will give it a try sometime. The suit may have to sit off to the side until hunting season is over for that. I don't trust it after that exprience. None of my other hunting clothes would glow purple under the blb light; so I think I will stick to them. Here are some papers to read that may convience some people. I would have to try that sportswash, test it with a blb light, and then test it out in the woods to be sure if that product works at all. I think I would rather check my clothes for UV reflecting dye right away; before having to deal with sprays or spooked deer. I also wash out the washing machine before putting my hunting clothes in and only use baking soda and scent free detergent that has no UV brightners in it.


Here are some websites on deer vision. There are two websites on horse vision that are the same, but can give a person an idea on deer vision. I'm not saying that deer and horse vision is the same. Hope this helps a little more for the people who are interested in this thread. I will have to try some of my own experiments with this new suit and my old camo. I think the UV thing may be the next big thing every hunter talks about. I will let everyone know in the future what I find out.
