Who knows? If not, take a guess!

What is the "margin" on a bow. I mean that business wise. How much does it cost to make one, in production?

I think I'd hate to know!

I have ZERO idea. I'll guess in the $100 range.

RE: Who knows? If not, take a guess!

It's a very tricky number to get out of the insiders. I'd say its $100 or less. They ain't getting rich selling bows.

YOu kidding? What costs are you leaving out?

1. Facilities
2. Employees salaries
3. Insurances
4. Advertising
5. R&D
6. Patents

WAY too many to list them all.......

TFOX 12-04-2008 10:32 PM

RE: Who knows? If not, take a guess!

I will say much higher than $100.Actually MUCH higher

Machining cost are high as well as materials.

I KNOW that companies get a much better rate on materials than we do but just for giggles,go try and figure what materials alone would cost for a bow for YOU to buy.

Agreed. LOTS. But, I'm still saying it is in the $100 range.

The actual bow is the cheap part!

YEah think about it.....

Materials are cheap, right? WHen the doc sticks a gloved finger up your ass......how much you reckon you're paying for that glove?

Wait.....they do that to you too,......don't they???

I misread your question...I thought you meant what kind of margin the dealers make on a bow.

As for the companies, I have no idea.[&:]

RE: Who knows? If not, take a guess!

I used the wrong terminology! Man, I'm on my game tonight! :D

Margin meaning how much they actually MAKE on the bow.

I do wonder what the TOTAL COST would be of a single bow.

Some accounting facts from a kid that has an accounting test tomorrow morning!

If you knew one (cost / margin).....couldn't you discern the other?;)

$100!!??? LOL I almost spit up my water when I read that..........:D

It's WAY more than that even on a KID's bow it's much more than that. MAnufacturers actually make the least amount of money on a kid's bow because you still have many of the same materials and labor costs but with a much lower dealer cost.

Top end bows have much more involved machining, larger raw materials etc etc.

Thebottom linecost of making a compound bow is closer to dealer price than you might imagine......;)

AND,dealer cost is closer to your cost than most can imagine.Especially if you are a lower level dealer.

The owner of the shop use told me he makes about $100 on a new bow. Says he makes most his money on the accessories.I know him quite well so I am sure he is being honest

Maybe, maybe not. I'm not sure.

You could be right. The thing is, I'm sure it is fairly different for each company. Oh well, a ballpark figure would be interesting to me!

Can't be that bad rthe way some bow companies advertise. I have a friend that owns a bow shop. He's small, but he can under cut any other shop in town for new bows and thats with a 40% mark up.

His was reply was...

"If I told you, I'd have to kill you". I thought we were closer then that! I'll still try and get it out of him.

What a great guy! [:-]

He's buying them off the black market then or stealing them off the loading docks. Even if he isn't figuring his true cost of sale into that figure (cost of bow, rent/mortgage, payroll, electric bill, insurance, etc), if he's undercutting other dealers he's not seeing 40%. Trust me, I worked in a shop and saw the invoices from the factory on all the new bows.

The dealersreally make a LOT less $$$ than you guys may think. I have no idea on the manufacturers, but I suspect it's a lot lower than you think there too. I imagine their margin is significantly less than the shops even. I used to want to own and run a shop until I realized this, I may still do it someday but it won't be because I want to make money doing it. If I'm ever financially stable enough to retire and need something to do to keep me occupied.......it might be an OK option then. I wouldn't want to try and raise a familydoing it though.

Just some food for thought for you guys...............

I worked for a shop for 2x years, one of the larger and more successful shops in a fairly populated area that is a bowhunting only zone. It took them about a$250k out of pocket startup cost, and 70 hours a week for the owner alone..............to make less profitthan I did with my first job out of college. No one is getting rich in this business. ;)

I am guessing $349.767876789 cents on average.

I'm lost, are you asking markup on a new bow or cost to make the bow? Neither one would be that high IMO. Just like most sales, the money is made long term, ie accessories, service, referrals, etc.

Dealer wise? Ill agree. My dealer always tells uswhatever money he makesis in the accessories, not the bows.
Manufacturer wise? HA....they aren't doin this for nothing.
