Seeing fewer deer?
I'll preface this with some numbers from the IL firearm first season. Statewide totals were down what, 15K from last year. Only one county had the same amount of deer harvested (exactly the same) all other counties were down. The archery harvest (up to the firearm season) was down over 3K from this time last year. I know my deer sightings went down alot from years past. EHD took a toll on deer numbers in my area in 2007, yet the harvest totals were up last year over previous years?[&:] Is the "brown its down" on every doe mentality starting to affect the deer numbers? Fewer hunters = fewer kills? I'm not sure what the answer is? Is this all over the midwest or something thats been limited to IL this year? Your thoughts?

RE: Seeing fewer deer?
For me, I have seen more deer this year than ever before. But I attribute that the different stratagies I have put into place this year rather than fluxuation in the herd population.
The more I learn, the less I know:) |
RE: Seeing fewer deer?
Sightings were definitely down this year, mostly attributed to EHD as you mentioned is my guess.

RE: Seeing fewer deer?
Rory, maybe that would help here in Va too. Our deer sightings/killing are down as well. Maybe instead of all doe tags going away, leave one for meat!

RE: Seeing fewer deer?
Deer kills were down In Mn as well. The Mn DNR hasn't released the numbers from the gun season being the ML Is still going on yet but word says It's way down from last year and previous years.

RE: Seeing fewer deer?
Sightings were down here for me. Until all the crops started coming out. Had alot of rain which kept the corn up longer than normal. Since that came out my sightings dramatically increased.

RE: Seeing fewer deer?
Yep, most def seeing less deer this year. And from what I hear, Wisconsin is way down as well.
I thought maybe it was because of NO acorns where I hunt, but who knows. |

Fewer hunters = fewer kills? I'm not sure what the answer is? Is this all over the midwest or something thats been limited to IL this year? Your thoughts? EHD is definately part of Illinois numbers. And we midwesterners had a tough winter last year. Snowfalls just about everywhere north of Springfield, Illinois pushed 100" and much more. We also have a yote problem across much of the state. Last spring while shed hunting I came across no less than 10 deer taken by the yotes. When that snow gets deep.. those whitetail can get into trouble real quick when a pack is around. CWD should not be forgotten either. Lot's of reasons for deer populations to be suffereing some. |
RE: Seeing fewer deer?
I attribute it to less hunters, less firearm permits sold and access to property. Less deer in my hunting lands............not really. Right now I am seeing quite a few deer, and that is because I just gained access to a property I've never hunted before.
