If you're as old as I am.....it's funny. Gomer was a real piece of work! 1 thing I have learned, you can have the plan, improve your hunting habitat, improve your entrance and exits to your stands. If you are boneshead and do not plant any corn, you get what you deserve:D I have 60 acres of nasty cover i planted, and hands down I'll take a cornfield over them. It depends. Does a hunter amass more data the more he hunts? YES. Does he get smarter? Not necessarily. It depends on if and how he analyzes the data, what conclusions he draws, and if he applies them to future hunting trips. Say some bozo hunter wonders into the woods, sees a deer in a spot and shoots it. Depending on why that deer is there he may or may not glean useful information. He may set up a stand in that spot and hunt there every year from then on not realizing that the buck was there because it had been jumped up by a dog, or some nature walker. Those set of circumstances may never happen again. So did he learn something? Sure, that particular buck was at that spot at that time. If he doesn't understand the why, he really hasn't gotten any useful information.Some people repeat the same mistakes year after year without ever learning from them and taking corrective action. Some, really don't care. They just enjoy the season and after the first week or two go back to watching football, satisfied with their experience in the woods or with friends. Comes down to motivation, observation, ability (analytical, abstract,and rational thought) and information resources. If two guys play baseball the same amount every year are they both going to play equally well? Probably not.

We had a saying..."Some guys have 20 years of experience and some guys have 1 year experience, 20 times"...:D You would think that everyone would get better with more woods time.... But, that just doesn't happen. I will use my step father and his brother as an example..... They have 90 or so years hunting experience between the two of them and they put in a good amount of time every year..... Neither one has ever shot a mature buck bow or gun. In fact neither have ever shot a 100+ inch buck. Both are outstanding carpenters though, well above average. Two of the best I have ever "met". Some people just get things.... While others don't. They get carpentry, butsetting upon deer, they don't "get it". They always tell me how lucky I am that I consistantly kill nice bucks..... It isn't luck, I don't bother to try to explain it anymore. |

Everytime I go out I learn something new. Usually "this spot sucks too." or "you can always hear someones dog barking, no matter how far you go back in the woods."

Actually, the older I get the more I figure it's OK to get worse. I really do. I've killed enough deer and good deer over my lifetime to satisfy anyones desires. I still yern for the hunt and the adventure, but really, I don't care if I shoot macho buck anymore. I don't go through all the extra steps to ensure success I once felt were mandatory. I don't buy gimmicks trying to improve. I may even smoke a cigarette if I feel it will add to the peace and quiet of my time in a tree. NOPE, I think it's just fine to get a little worse as time goes on. It's OK just to have fun as long as you have some success once in a while. NOPE, I think I've arrived in that I now feel it's just fine to get a little worse. Serious as I can be. Just as long as I don't mess up anyone elses fun, I'm good. P.S> All this talk about mature budks yada yada yada... it's all relative to location, time spent and population. Good representative deer would be a worth goal I think. |

I agree (davidmil) with the mature buck scenario anyways. I hunt in northern ohio and id be happy with an average buck around here. I would say barringdumb luck lead slingers, 65-75 % of all the mature bucks ive seen in my 4 years of bowhunting have been killed are on land that are well know honeyholes that the same one or two guys has hunted for years. So thats my number ine priority for09 season, early-early scouting followed by trying to convince farmers why they should allow me to hunt their property. Which you all know is incredibly EASY:eek:. blah blah blah anyways.
Yes bowhuntings learning curve is the steepest and farthest to the top of anything that comes to mind. Is there a (top)???? |
