Do you lose weight/get beat up?

I know there are a lot of people here that log some serious hours on stand. I havent' missed a hunt since opening day of bow season. Don't know how many hours or sits (I dont' keep track). I'm just going to say ..... a ton [8D]. Throw in the miles logged on your body pre season and the season itself does your body feel it towards the end of the season? I shed about 10-15 lbs. every hunting season. A lot of dings along the way. At this point my legs feel like4" x 4"'s. Neck, back, feet, etc... all but shot. I feel like I've been in a 12 rounder with Mike Tyson :D. Who else puts their body through holy hell? Or am I just getting old? Oh well... gotta get to a stand cya.

Yep...I lost 12 lbs elk hunting on my 10 day hunt and 5 lbs on my MN hunt and have kept it off with MO whitetail scouting/hunting too. Hiking, climbing, lugging climbing sticks, a stand, a pack, hanging, tearing down setups each hunt and rehanging for the next day etc. Eating lightly on stand and now that it is cold out I will burn calories trying to stay warm on stand. I am at my perfect weight and perfect health right now and have never been in better shape, that I can recall. 200# 6' 3" and no fat. I plan on keeping it that way too. The most I have ever weighed is 220# but I like the 200# weight best.

I go unaffected by hunting seasons. Mostly due to the fact im training minimum 5 days a week and always keep a very consistent diet.

RE: Do you lose weight/get beat up?

I've lost 17 lbs since October 12th. That is the date we started our Colorado elk trip. I don't contribute it to fat loss but muscle loss. I've lost 25 lbs off my bench so far from that date. I just can't get in the gym as much due to being in a tree stand for a week at a time. I know I've lost some fat too but I had 13 percent before and it's down to 9-10 percent. I'm starting to get back in there and have been getting back to what I was.

minimal sleep, minimal food (deer jerky and water when hunting), and 90-100 hours on stand. Yes I am tired and beat up, but not even close to being done for the year..
I love it

Matt hit the nail on the head... LOL!

I'm EXTREMELY beat up right now (I actually NEEDED the week off for Thanksgiving...) Got up at 4:15 again and had to come home to take a nap before I could function coherently for the rest of the day. Next two days will be afternoon hunts after work; trying to squeeze as much in as I can before the last Illinois gun season.

Good news is it looks like my landowner is FINALLY getting the corn off the farm, so maybe my buck sightings will increase some. Hopefully.

RE: Do you lose weight/get beat up?

Unfortunantly the weight don't drop to much but the body sure takes a beating. I don't know what it is about sitting on stand that makes my fricken neck get stiff and ache but it sure does. I am standing most of the time on stand too so the lower back and legs ache like the dickens. It must be the age creeping in though because my 26 year old hunting buddy says nothing bothers him at all. [:@][:@]

I have lost about 13 pounds since the last week of Oct, and one of my knees is killing me. Rain sent me home early yesterday and I spent the eve on the couch with ice on it. Also have carpal tunnel in both wrists that really gets aggrevated hanging stands and driving as much as I have lately. Makes what little sleep I have been getting not much good, lol.

Bring on the late season!

I dont lose weight, but i hear what your say. I just ended my deer season, and feel spent, mentaly and physically. Now I can take my time and shot hogs as I need them.

try shooting a 24 hour bowfishing tournament. It makes deer hunting seem easy on the body. But yes I know what you mean

I lost about 20#'s. My hands felt like they've been put through a grinder....and I've had some bad aches and pains along the way.

It was all worth it.;)

RE: Do you lose weight/get beat up?

Funny you mention your hands, Jeff... I was gonna put that in my original post.

After showering and washing with non-scented soap for the better part of two months straight, my hands get to looking like they could just suck up a whole bottle of skin lotion in abouta second and a half.

I know my customers (medical sales) have to wonder what goes on around this time of year the way they start looking... but at least I'm better off than a guy I know in pharma sales who's pretty big-time into mixed martial arts... I can't imagine showing up at the Doc's office on Monday with black eyes and accompanying lacerations trying to detail a drug while he's looking at my face like that. :)

Good point. I promise you our annual week long TX bowfishing trip is far and above more taxing than the entire deer season.

During bear hunting I'll loose at least 5 to 10lbs In only a 7 to 9 day stretch. We really bust our ass's checking baits and hunting. We don't use 4 wheelers for anything, takes the hunt out of It for me. I always seem to find myself at the Chiropractor at the end of bear hunting usually every year from putting and taking down many hang on stands and from carrying 100lbs of bait In and out 15 times a day 1/8 mile Into a woods. Then If someone gets a bear, It's a long drag again on foot (bear drag harder then anything I've ever dragged). I love the work though, It's very rewarding and It's just plain and simple part of the hunt.

Season definitely takes its toll.

It doesn't get any easier as the years go by either;)

RE: Do you lose weight/get beat up?

Ive lost probably 5-8 pounds since sept 15th. Id say its split between muscle and fat, Im definitely thinner but I've lost a lot of muscle mass cause I havent been to the gym since october and I only went 5 times that month... I'm going to get back into my training routine starting tonight:) Gonna take advantage of the weight loss to trim off some more fat... I have noticed my legs are in much better shape than when I started, however I've also got some back pain now and then and I attribute that to not working out and still lifting stuff like normal...

What a bunch of girly men! Just kidding! I recently returned from a 12 day Idaho rifle hunt.Up at 4:15 every morning, walking many miles every day,in bed at 8:00 or 8:30,eating my a-- off and still dropping weight. The hunters version of a buck in rut,all but the sex with many different females part.

Yeah it takes its toll. Work out pretty regularly and keep in pretty good shape. But come hunting season there's no time for any of that. I actually dont mind it cause it forces me to diet and get ripped. Come jan.1st its back to bulkin up!

RE: Do you lose weight/get beat up?

Yesterday felt like a vacation so to speak [8D]. After about 3 weeks of cold northeast weather we had a 42 degree day in the afternoon. I dipped into my early season gear and didn't have to lug around the layers, bibs, and parka all over the woods. Light pants, some underarmour and medium jacket yesterday afternoon. To top it off I left my climber home and jumped in a ladderstand. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh felt too easy. Almost like I was missing something. For some strange reason I feel refreshed. Didn't see a single deer lol but it felt good on the body for a change. Back to reality today. It's cold and snowy and I'm going DEEP with my climber.

You know, it's not how much you hunt, it's how you hunt. Sometimes the better part of valor is to give your body, the woods, the stands ... everything a rest. I'd say hunt smarter, not more.

Well I attempt to do both, we both know I'm not very smart though [8D];)

My lower back is very sore at this time of the year most years....and I usually lose about 10 pounds. I plan on losing more in December as I am going to be stalk hunting during bad weather a lot more. Usually I just get pretty worn out come late December from hunting for 3 months.

At one point I was down 15# but then the wife fattened me up at Thanksgiving so I am 10# down. Injuries have been plentiful, back in October I ripped a good gash in my knee on a tree peg and also strained the tendons or ligaments in the elbo I broke back in 2006. I bruised my good elbow pretty bad a week ago and have had plenty of cuts and bruises. I plan on getting my butt back into the gym and doing some serious shed hunting and losing another 20-30# in the process do I can eliminate some injuries next year.

I usually gain weight. I've gained about 5lbs this season. I hike all over creation with a climber on my back most of the time, but since most of my hunting spots are an overnight stay and roadtrip away, I eat like crap while on the road. Outside of hunting season, I might eat fast food 1-2 times a year and try to eat healthy........but during hunting seasonI eat fast food and garbage like that almostevery week. I also bring lots of snacks and goodies to the tree with me to keep me from having an excuse to get down.......that's the only way I'm able to sit all day long.

I'll be back at losing weight here in a few weeks. I lost 15lbs in the last year (gained 5 back during season). I'd like to lose that 5, and another 15 on top of that in the next year.

I usually burn off 10 pounds during every hunting season.

NO JOKE! I never realized how dead I would be after even one night of bowfishing. Standing on a hard deck with a bow in hand for 12+ hours..constantly lifting fish...that gets tiring quick.

Deer hunting doesn't get me, besides the lack of sleep. I think it's just you old farts[8D]. If I wasn't going to bed after midnight on Fridays trying to get up at 330 to go hunting, I would function as normal. This Sunday I caught up on sleep while being down with sinuses and what not..I am reenergized and ready for the rest of the winter.

I think I've weighed the same for like 4 years.

It does take a lot out of you though.
