RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
I huntedall last of last week, On wed i was up the tree and the wind started picking up and up, and up, untill i was getting kind of worried how i was ever going to pull off and kind of shot?
At that point i sead to myself ok this is where safety over rules hunting for me. (The wind was gusting 25-30mph) I came down went home. The wind died down so back in the stand on thursday afternoon and took a small 8pt. |
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
besides the cold that eats through you when its windy and cold, the saftey factor keeps me home...
gusts in the 20-30mph range usually keeps me home..usually when its like that the sustrained wind is 10-20mph with gusts upto 30..that will generally keep me in. ive been so close to trees that have been blown over that when it splashed in the creek i got wet... one time i opted to go small game hunting with the buddies instead of bow hunting due to heavy rains...we were coming through a stand of pines when the wind kicked up hard and fast...tops of pines were going everywhere...talk about scary...we unloaded and made a mad dash for the field.. coon hunting a couple times dad and i got stuck in very nasty wind storms...i remember it atleast 2x...i was YOUNG...6-10yo. big trees coming down all around us...dont know if it was a freak thing or if dad didnt watch the weather or if the weather predictors were even worse 15yo ago than they are now or why we went running hounds those nites... those are just a couple of the closer calls... but needless to say "ive seen enough" i wanna live to hunt another day...being in a tree when its REAL windy just aint worth it to me....not to mention shooting in wind like that is difficult... |
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
Any "wind" is too much for me. I CAN'T STAND hunting in the wind!!!! However, it won't usually stop me from hunting. It makes it muchcolder, that's for sure.[:@]

RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
I know some of you hunt flatter terrain where this is impossible but for me - it is never too windy, I can alway find a place to sit out of the wind in a valley and generally the deer are there out of the wind also. I have sat with 45mph gusts on the bluffs above me, 5mph where I was.

RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
I actually don't think the wind has ever kept me from hunting. It's threw a major loop into my philosophy, strategy and expectations but I do not think that it has ever kept me home. Don't get me wrong though, I absolutely HATE it. I would rather hunt downpours or extreme heat than hunt the wind- it just makes me weary while on stand.
That being said, last February we had a HUGE wind storm as I was taking down stands and blinds. I'm talking 70-80 mph. I don't know why I was out there, stupidity I would say. But it didn't take long for me to head on home when I see a huge bull pine snap off at the top.[:o] |
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
anything over 15 is too much for most of the time..
|
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
25mph is pushing it....I can take 10-20mph.
|
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
Lets not talk about the wind in Maryland lately.[:@] I wish I was off this morning... I'd love to be in the woods right now with the way the snow is coming down in Harford County.:D
I agree with most though.... 20+ high winds are a little much for me. I won't hunt because of safety issues... not so much that I don't like the wind. If its an occasional gusts... then I might try and stick it out. |
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
The wind effects my hunting a lot.
If its 40+ degrees and windy, then I'm fine. But if its 29- degrees and windy, I'm not going. I can't stand the cold+wind combination. I can't do it. I can't seem to make myself sit through all of that just to kill a deer. |
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
When it stops being "fun" it's too much for me. Here it depends on the direction as much as the speed. Being on the lee side of the mountain can mitigate a lot of the wind. Still hunt a pine or spruce stand back there if the wind is too much to be in a tree. The wind does great things for masking movement and noise.

RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
LOL....its 30.8 right now, here. Wind is blowing out of the NW at sustained 15-20, gusting to 30. Its 2:50pm EST...and I'm on the pc instead of in a stand.
I'm trying to tell myself it will be worth it cause you can't kill one if you don't go, but dang its hard - especially when I haven't been seeing much lately. I'll probably mosey out for the last 2hrs as much as I want to wimp out. |
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
I'd ratherhunt when the winds aren't excessive, but "usually" they don't stop me from going hunting.... 20-30 mph days are pretty common around here. When the wind catches gravel & hits me in the face,i'll to stay out of it, or at least hunt the heavier timbered areas.

RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
Once it gets up there with 20+ mph gusts not my thing, under that I can deal as long as I am dressed correctly.

RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
i sat through it yesterday i jus couldnt do it again today.. 11 hours yesterday was alot to handle.. so i went rabbit huntin instead... more fun any how!
|
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
25mph+ is pushing it for me, only because I sit in tree stands, and I can't stand my tree moving that much.

RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
Depending on the time of year, I will sit ina friggen tornado if that's what it takes to be out there. In November, early to mid, I will sit no-matter the conditions. Try to position yourself in a bottom or a protected area that deer may prefer over a ridge-top or something.
My cameraman and I satfrom first-light unitl last light on November 7th. We had 20-30 mph winds ALL-DAY, and the temperatures were in the upper 30's to low 40's as the high. I FROZE, but we saw 13 bucks - no shooters - but could have killed a B&C if he showed. That's just the way it is, conditions may make for a miserable sit - but I can guarentee you can't kill something from a warm and cozy chair inside. On the afternoon of November 15, 2005 - I didn't want to go hunting. We had strong 30 mph winds here in SE Iowa with HARD rain coming down. I talked with my buddy (Big George), and he said something like "you ain't gonna kill one sitting inside". After 46 straight days of hunting I was burned out and didn't have a good spot for a NW wind where I knew a big buck was living. I grabbed my climber and gear and just went out. Set-up in an easy spot where I just felt as though I was putting in my day of hunting - and about 20 minutes of light left - I was just waiting for it to get dark so I could go home and get out of the miserable weather. The next moment I killed the best buck of my life, the Iowa Tree Shredder. If it could happen to me on that night, it can happen anytime. I was at the lowest of lows - I mean straight depressed. I still can't believe it went down the way it did. Best day of my life probably! ![]() |
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
If my tree's a rockin, I won't be a climbin'
:D |
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
:D You guys better never come to Western South Dakota. 25mph is considered breezy here. Wind is a fact of life here and we just deal with it. It doesn't affect the deer or their movement. We have days with sustained winds in the 30mph range with gusts up to 50 and the deer will be out and about as normal.
I usually don't let the wind keep me home. If it gets really bad there is generally a blizzard attached and you can't get out anyway. Recently returned from a Nebraska trip and we had high winds the entire week. 15-20 with gusts in the 30 range. Didn'taffect the deer movement atall as we had a great hunt. Buy somewindstopper clothing and get out there!! |
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
In my area of hunting, deer don't seem to move too well when the wind is blowing 25+. I probably won't go out whenthe wind'sblowing that hard.
|
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
It's to windy when I'm afraid to let go of the tree to shoot.
|
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
I have hunted 15 of the last 17 days, and only two of those had winds less than 20, and hunted one day with winds as high as 50. Tired of the wind, but no such thing as too windy. Have seen more big deer this year than prolly the last 10 seasons put together. Get some good clothes and you can tolerate it if you choose to.

RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
Gonna be 25 degrees and 12 mph winds tomorrow morning.
They are says with wind chill it will feel like 15 degrees. I'm hunting on Bow permit. The wife is gonna go with me. She goes and watches ( has been for the last year now ). She justpassed her shotguntest, so she will be gunning this year. It will be the coldest day out for her so far. |
RE: When is it to windy for YOU?
stand anything over 20 ground maybe 25 or 30. I must have the really drive to hunt over 15 if it is that high or higher i will really think about staying home
