Default So close but yet so far away

I went out last night set up my pop up. same place i went to opening day gun season.
This morning i went out got in about 5:45 or 6. I heard a deer walk by when it was still dark. Had to be 10 feet behind me going down the trail i came down.
I did not see anything so i left around 10.00 then went back around 3. About 20 minutes before dark I look up and see the large buck i have seen near the road in a clover field a couple time. I think he is a 11 point. but it was hard to tell he was about 60 to 70 yards got down a small clearing.
i pick up my shotgun draw down and get ready. This happen in about 10 seconds. Another 5 he was dead. I get my sight on his shoulder and go to click the safety. Then i hear it. The three local dogs barking like a storm then the buck takes off and the dogs are not far behind.
I had to think for a second did this really happen.
First buck i see when sitting on a hunt. These dogs are all over 60 pounds i think two are pits one is another large breed.
I saw them when hunting once before.

There lucky if they would have stopped i would have shot them dead.
I am going back to he same spot tomorrow. Hopefully i will catch him going to the field before they can get to him.
And if they happen to come in range i might just mistake them for a coyote.

Tim, why don't you try catching them and take them to the dog pound? I'm sure they're very nice dogs, andsomeone could adopt them.
