The dreaded quartering to you shot
Every year I need to be reminded how stupid of a shot this is. I shot an 8pt on Wednesday. And he was little close for me, and I felt anytime I was going to get busted. So, being overconfident with my bowtech commander and 460gr arrows, I let it fly to his shoulder. I shook my head after I hit the trigger. It penetrated maybe 12" with a thunderhead BH. Good news, is I saw him drop in 40 yards. Bad news is, it could have been a different story. Just for analysis, I tried to see blood. Not a drop up to where he dropped. If this was an evening hunt, this could have been bad.
So even though I hit the heart and it ended well with him expiring in litterly seconds, just a reminder guys, that its a low precentage shot and you could be sick tracking one with no blood. 3" higher, and maybe instead of 40 yards, he could have went more. Guess I need to add a picture.:) |
RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
mine was quartering to me and i didnt seem to have a problem traking him

RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
Know what you mean. Quartering to Good with Gun, Big NO-NO with a Bow.

RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
Good point. Don't be afraid to take someone else's experience and use it as your wisdom. Just because it worked out well once for you doesn't mean it will every time, nor should it be expected to.

RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
I'd have to agree. I believe it's the biggest bonehead shot they take. I also can't tell you the number of lost deer stories that I have to listen to every season thanks to the quartering towards shot. :(

RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
I love that angle when I'm gun hunting because I know I can take out some shoulder bone and still plow through the vitals. I don't like that shot with my bow because the odds of getting your arrow to find a path to the vitals that doesn't require penetrating heavy bone is far less than a broadside or quartering away shot.
BTW......Congrats on the buck bigcountry!! |
RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
I let the biggest buck of my life walk last night at 20yds because he only presented me with a head on and quartering to shot. It was close, but I cannot live with wounding an animal like that. There's always another day...like tonight...hopefully[8D]

MGH-PA
Good for you. I did the same Monday morning. Not the biggestbuckI ever seen but it filled my criteria for a shooter. Ken |
RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
Congrats on the buck Mark! :) I've had to pass up several bruisers (including a dandy 140+ buck) because they wouldn't accomodate me in presenting the angle I needed. I let a huge 9 point go at 17 yards a few years ago hoping to get a better angle that never materialized. He was found rotting in a stream several weeks later from where some poachers failed to find him. I was told about it by a neighbor and by that time, someone had found the buck and remove the rack as well.
I'm glad it worked out well for you. |
RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
Congrats bigcountry, glad it worked out!

RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
Given that shot I will pass everytime it is low percentage to say the least. I havea 180 class 12 last year 25 yards and passed on that shot looking back knowing I wouldn't have got another angle I would have been tempted to take the shot but Im glad I didn't

RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
Past on a real big 7 the other night. Quartering to me.. I opted not to take the shot and I am still upset about it though I know I did the right thing. I hope to see him again..
Still, there was a little part of me that believed I could snake it in at the base of the neck and hit some vitals. Downside, no blood trail.. That damn voice of reason again...LOL...[:'(] |
RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
Nice buck Mark, and good advise too!

RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot

ORIGINAL: BobCo19-65 BowTech????????? No really, congratulations on the deer.
But looking back, I wish I had my longbow. I had a perfect 10 yard shot on a 6pt that would have beena great trad kill last week. I was kicking myself. |
RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
Great thread Mark. I too hear of bad endings on people taking that shot and not having It work out In there favor. It's risky and It can be done. Anything that's risky or Iffy doesn't usually mix well with bow hunting. Last night a friend of mine shot a 140" 8 point while gun hunting. He shot this same buck 3 days prior to this and knocked him over and then the buck got back up and took off. Not a drop of blood was found! He also had the shot angle you are reffering to. Any Idea where he hit it? I was surprised at where he hit it.[:-] I'll add that he got about an Inch of penetration the 1st time he hit It the other day. The shot was at 60 yards shooting slugs using a 12 gauge 870 Remington.
Congratulation's on your buck Mark, he's a great looking buck!! |
RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot

RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
Nice buck and nice shot bud, thanks for posting the pics and the story and most importantly reminding everyone how hard of a shot it is and even in making a lethal shot there is a lot that can be questioned

RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
That shot depends on how sharp the angle the deer is on too. Sometimes if it's just a slight quarter-to angle, and you can easily avoid that shoulder, you can go in the lung(s)and exit the liver. They don't go far on that shot at all. But if it's a sharp angle, and you have to shoot through the shoulder to get to where you want to hit, then it's best to use your own personal experience and shooting ability to determine what to do. I personally avoid it, I don't like shooting at shoulders, and I don't like tracking deer.
You put a good shot on him, and you should feel good about it! That takes skill, and you applied it well. Congrats! |
RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
Congrats on the buck.

RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
Congrats Mark and good point. Was this on the farm you ask me if I wanted in on close to my house?

RE: The dreaded quartering to you shot
Good post, but didn't you call the kettle black, after the fact?
Congrats on the nice Buck! I did the same thing last year and caught the liver and the arrow went through the belly. This 6 pointer I shot went about 250 yards and the intestines plugged the hole, with little blood for tracking. Fortunately I backed out until the next morning and found out they really do go to water!!??..:D ![]() |
