RE: Success Rate...Morning vs. Afternoon
All good points. I should have been more clear in that I am talking about deer movement in general...not just bucks and/or mature bucks. Although this time of year its very easy to focus only on that...

RE: Success Rate...Morning vs. Afternoon
I like hunting mornings more just because I would rather gut and drag a deer in daylight.
That being said, the biggest buck I ever shot was at 2 PM, and I still hunt every evening I can. But when I am thinking about sleeping in, I just remember how much nicer it is to shoot one in the morning...

I have gotten 2 buck in archery and both were taken about the same time 4:30 PM. I prefer hunting the morning thoughas I believe I see more deer in the mornings just never have been in the right stand at the right time to take one.

It all depends on the exact area you are hunting...with my spots, morning action is 3x better than afternoon....for both numbers seen, and quality of bucks seen.
I dont know enough about the big picture of the area to determine the WHY, but if I only got one hunt in this place, good money would be placed on me getting in there in the morning.
Ive been the opposite really. Ive always hunted mornings for the past 8-9 years, and only in the past few years started hunting afternoons very seriously.

Unless it's a Saturday..and I just wanna get out of the house....'09 won't see me hunting any mornings until mid-Oct.
Then.....I'll do it sparingly until Nov. rolls in.
Then....all bets are off.

I'll agree with that 100%. I'd much rather track, drag, gut, skin, etc., during the day. I shot my biggest last year at a touch after 3Pm and this one this year at 2:30 PM

Hey, hey, hey...easy there Dave. I actually really enjoy the morning hunts...love being in the woods when they wake up and things start happening. I'm just saying that I don't seem to see as many deer in the AM as I do in the PM.
