RE: How high in the sky do you go
Mine was 12 untill someone stole the bottom two sections of ladder. Wonder if 4 feet is high enough.

I have 6 ladder stands, and there is not one of them that is over 10' tall

RE: How high in the sky do you go
depends on many things...first and foremost if your comfort range. i'll admit, im fine at 20 or so...but get me past that, and its somewhat "new" to me and i feel like its my first time in a treestand for a bit...
other factors are terrain..if you HAVE to climb in the bottom of a ditch and will have deer coming from somewhat above you, i like to get as high as possible.
if theres no good cover, im climbing till i feel like im high enough. today i was probably 25-30ft. my bow was hanging 5-8ft off the ground from my top portion(20 or 25ft rope i dont remember) why? it was the only tree that was climable and to get to a suitable portion of the tree, i HAD to go that high..and to get above 2 young trees i had to go up...
i will often take a little lower tree with cover over a higher tree with no cover. i like cover around me and behind me. heck, i actually like a tree or 2 or 3 not far infront of me...i got my lanes between the trees and can move and draw behind their cover. i dont like to be lower than 12ft or so...15 is about the minimum i go..i like right around 20 or 25(end of my rope)
when you get higher, the shot angle gets steeper making shots difficult. gotta think about that..
and trees thin out as you go up...after 20-25ft alot of trees will be too thin for me to keep going up and have my stand at the right angle(perpindicular to the tree)
i dont really trim trees that im climbing...tiny stems and such i will, but i dont saw big limbs..i can usually find another tree thats better to climb...usually not hard to find a tree thats straight and climbable in most of my forested areas...
wind is another consideration...some say you can get high enough to keep your wind off the ground...i dont know..
