Any luck with calls?

I haven't used any scent this year and I've been calling sparringly. I haven't had the chance to call to a buck that I've spotted, but I've blind called about 5 times and had it work 3 of those times. One of those times was with the can call and I got a 10 pointer to come in. Busted g-3 so I passed. The other 2 times I used my grunt call and had a couple of 1 1/2s and a 2 1/2 come in. Other than that........ nothing! [&o]

How about you guys?

I don't usually blind call much, but I tried Friday night. I gave three quick turns on the can, and a few soft grunts. Brought in a 6 I've been eyeing, but he didn't come around...he stayed behind me the whole time. It's down to the last week here, so all bets are off. I will be trying a little of everything, so we will see. I don't use scents so I can't comment on that.

I've had several Bucks respond to grunting. 2 for sure as a direct result!

Yes there is. For some reason I can hardly buy a doe (only seen 3 so far!) So there is a lot of competition for them. I can't explain the lack of does. Possibly, the adjacent land owner is knocking them off with ag tags!!??

I have had no positive responses to calls - as usual - this year, but rattling is treating me well. I rattled in two 3.5+ year old bucks out of about 10-12 attempts this season (and one button buck[&:]). Both bucks smelled me:( as the wind was swirling just too much (it wasnt when I picked up the horns!). It must be the buck:doe ratio being good around here, but the last few years have been exceptional for me with rattling antlers. The only call I have ever had decent luck with is a short/wheeze - if the buck's dominant - but I still carry a grunt tube.

I had a fine 8pt 50 yards away Friday morning. I grunted sparringly and he came out in the field looking. He then started trashing some briars. He then started walking away. I then hit a grunt again. He came back and got 40 yards from me. I hit it again barely this time. He walked past me at what I thought was 30 yards. I ranged a tree before he got to it, and it was 29 yards, but shot and in all actuallity it was 35 yards. My depth perception sucks these days. I didn't realize how far he was from the tree. Anyway, clean miss. This happened Friday. The big boys are responding to grunts.

Never have ha any luck with calls until last night.I had a doe come thru with a 6 point right on her tail. I gave my can call a couple of turns, and he stopped in his tracks,[8D]but he didnt want to come in, so I grunted on my grunt tube a couple of times, and still nothing. I then snort wheezed at him, and that is all it took.He came in with his ears lad back, and walking stiff legged. Too bad when I took the shot at about 25 yards, I missed him completely.[:@]

I don't blind call much either. In reality, I haven't called much to deer over the last few years. Probably due to lack of response, so I figured it one less thing I need to carry.

Anyway... Last Saturday, I rattled in a one horned two pointer. He came in skittish and hung up aboout 40 yards away in the thicket. I gave him one grunt and he came the rest of the way. I grunted in two bucks later that afternoon. Both deer eneded upwithin 20 yards. Neither was coming in until I grunted, then they changed direction. Fast forward to this past Wednesday. I had decent buck cruise past me and give me the slip. He's going out of sight into the brush. I grab the grunt tube and hit it once very softly since I knew he was well within earshot. He immediately stops and I assume he was looking back my way since all I can see is his hind end while I'm busy hiding. A few seconds pass and he can't locate the deer, so he decides to keep going into the thicket. He takes a couple steps and I hit him with two more light grunts. He stops, then gives a loud exhale, turns and comes right back in kinda bristled up. He steps into the shooting lane and I let him have it.

IMO, I think I just caught the deer over the last few days at a point in the season where they were more receptive to calling.

Nope. I have even seen some light hearted chasing and the bucks did not respond. I even had 3 smaller bucks up on an oak flat scent checking where a doe just ran past and called to them softly. They looked up and then got back to smelling and eating. I tried young buck grunts and saw doe bleats...they didn't even budge.

Most of the deer I saw before this weekendcame in to calling/rattling sequences. I've hadthe best luck with rattling/grunting together rather than grunting alone.

I have had several small bucks come in to the can call this year but had my best success with the Primos Buck Roar. I took my ten pointer last week about 10 minutes after blind calling with the Buck Roar and called in a few other bucks in the days before.

RE: Any luck with calls?

Last Monday and Tuesday, I rattled and had buck after buck come in. All in all, I rattled approximately 10 times and saw bucks within 5 minutes of 8 of those rattling sequences. A few sequences brought a few bucks. Mostly 1.5 year olds, but a few shooters. The buck I ended up getting came in 5 times. Yes, 5 times.

RE: Any luck with calls?

I've had a TON of response from calling. Last week alone I had a 4 point come in and I can called it and it turned and walk to 10 yards. The next day I had a 7 point come about 50 yards out, I can called it, no response. Grunted at him and he jumped and turned and trotted into about 8 yards. A few weeks prior to that I rattled in 4 different bucks on one day from one spot. I've had tons of response from rattling this year as well.

Oh, and yesterday I rattled and had a little 4 point come in. I let him walk by and then decided I'd see if I could call him back. I got the grunt out, gave two soft grunts, and he turned around and walked back in to around 15 yards. Up until this year I wasnt sure that calls worked, but this year has definitely changed my mind.

Grunted in a nice eight this morning. He came in on a rope till about 60 yards and then got nervous since he didn't see anything. I usually have pretty good success with the grunt at the right time of year but the can doesn't seem to produce for me for some reason.

If I have very limited time in the woods (like this year) I'm really vocal with the calls. I blind call ALOT. Doesn't always work, but its fun when it does.

RE: Any luck with calls?

Greg, Friday out i Ogle county I had some success with calls. In the morning I had a 2 small 8pts a 4pt come in to rattling and grunting this happened about 7:30am. At 8am I had a big 8pt probably 3 1/2 yr old come in 10min after rattling and grunting. He saw my decoy and started walking away so I grunted at him with the buck roar and theat turned him towards the decoy with the hair on his back bristling up. I stopped him and clipped a branch and hit him in the leg,I lookeda long time but no luck. Hopefully it wasn't a lethal hit.

Friday at 3pm I saw a nice tall 8pt 130-140 class at about 120 yards, I rattled and he came on a string to 60yds and he froze looking for the bucks fighting. I grunted with the buck roar and that made him jump the fence and give me a 40yd shot which he jumped the string. I've never seen a deer drop as much as he did.

Not much luck with calls. I got one buck to turn around and come back to me with the can, but he didn't commit.

RE: Any luck with calls?

Over the years I have had bucks looking for the source of the call. I actually had 3 bucks show up this year after a few bleats and a series of roars and grunts. It was cool for sure to see 3 bucks show up at one time.

RE: Any luck with calls?

Last Saturday, about a half-hour just afterdaybreak, I caught a glimpse of a deer run past a clearning about75 yards away from me; I couldn't tell what it was, so I decided to give a couple calls on the true-talker. After a few minutes without hearing or seeing anything I gave a couple more grunts, and out of nowhere, a six pointer came charging right inon me. I just happened to be hunting on the ground, and he was so close - within 10 feet - I couldn't do anything.

I've had a lot of success with calling, but it's cost me a few as well.A couple years ago, I blew on my grunt tubewhenthere was a real nice8 point directly behind my treestand.I didn't know he was their, because it was raining, so Ididn't hear him; sure enough, he bolted.

Lesson learned. I use caution with the call now, and always scan my surroundings before using it.

On Thurs day I washanging my climberon the tree and a smaller buck ran out into the clearing grunted and stomped a couple times so I was going to mess with him a little bit. I grab the horns grunt one time and tickle em and to my left about 10yds away a mature buck came charging at me I almost soiled my pants. When he seen me he took off the other way. Pretty crazy.

RE: Any luck with calls?

I "can" called in a Doe and Fawn three separate times, after they vacated the oak flat where I have my stand.
Other than that, not much.

I decided to try more blind calling this year without any luck, all of the 25 or so deer I've seen this year just walked in.
So I'm questioning those marketing schemes, as those fancy DVD's you buy with a call must be caged animals or something??!
Obviously not NH hunting!

Rattling bags and grunt calls have been working good in Texas over the last two-three weeks.

Yes. I needed the buck to step 5 more yards from his scrape into my shooting lane. Every time he tried to walk away I'd grunt and he'd come back and go through his scrape routine,3 times, then he got bored and walked away. He responded but no shot opportunity!

Zero luck with blind calling, but the buck that I got last Friday is another story. I first saw him at what I thought was about 75 yards, crossing and heading deeper into the timber. With nothing to lose I hit the rattle bag and grunt tube which must have caused him to U-turn on a dime because he came in on a string and did not stop until he was directly below me. No doubt the bag and call brought him in.

RE: Any luck with calls?

Two successes with calls this year. Have never hunted in areas with good buck/doe ratios, so calling is still something I am learning and hesitant to use consistently. I am hunting in east TN. Very early (first half of Oct.) I had a spike bumping a doe around for some unknown reason. She outdistanced him into the timber, and he started to move off. I grunted and brought him back into bow range right by my tree. I'd like to say I passed him, but with the freezer empty he would have gotten shot had he given me a clear opportunity. Fortunately for him, he didn't.

The second time was eight days ago, last Monday. Around an hour after first light, I gave a two bleats followed by a series of grunts. Within a few minutes, A large, heavy racked buck showed up in the pine thicket behind me, bristled up and ready to fight. He also never gave me a clear shot, and only hung around for about two or three minutes until the wind began to swirl and the game was up.

I don't do much blind calling, but will blind rattle. I've gotten nothing with that, but that is nothing new around here. Calling to bucks I have gotten looks almost every time and got a buck to leave a doe he was chasing with some can bleats and grunts, and I believe the buck I shot was looking for the same calling I had been doing.
