Someone forward this to TXhoghunter. Maybe there is still hope for him. We'll just bombard him with these real life stories of someone's luck running out!

Thanks for posting! Never climb a tree anymore without my harness on!

Horrible and tragic.
I hope someone reads this and changes their minds about using a harness.
I would say thought that a great majority of hunters that do change their mind don't do it becauseof an article, or a post here.
I believe theywill onlydo so because of a close call, an incident that effects a friend or family member, or something happens at home that makes them look at being around for their family differently.
Hopefully someone does change their mind before it is too late

Yes this is and was a tragic accident & FREAKY for sure. But due to the fact that he wasn't wearing a treestand harness.........He was hunting out of a BOX BLIND and fell on a fencing T post used for hog panels and fencing.
I don't believe I've ever seen anyone use a harness in a box blind.

RE: Another preventable death-no harness

If its high enough to fall from its high enough to wear a harness box blind or not. Just for the climb in it is certainly worth the trouble. I have never hunted from an elevated box blind so I can't speak from experience.

Sad this has happened. In today's world with all the safety gear available for a minimum price. Also it is a shame per the article that his son was with him. I only hope it was not a young kid who had to witness his fathers death.

Looks like he wasnt even hunting, instead ON TOP of the stand spraying for wasps? either way just another reminder to wear those harnesses! Hunt today and tomorrow.

I dont understand how he couldve worn a harness from a box stand, no trees to connect it to.

If you don't wear a vest YOU ARE JUST DUMB! They should make it a law if thats what it takes. My god I have not heard of one story where someone who fell was planning on it. I don't hunt high or I have a bar in front of me. NO EXCUSE!!!!! Wear it or be labled a idiot!

Worst part about it is his son was right there, and witnessed it.
No telling how old this young man was :(.
Not to mention how it will impact him personally.

As many times as I see these threads is as many times as I'm going to say this same thing:

If a fall from the top of the Sear's Tower can kill you just as a fall from 20ft up can kill you, why would you wear a safety harness on the tower and not the tree?

Here's a new one for you non harness wearers: If getting run over by a bus going 5mph can kill you just the same as getting run over by a bus going 50mph, why would you be more or less afraid of either scenario?

Connect to the ladder or install a prussic knot on a rope secured to the stand.

Buy a larger harness. And , again, use a rope tied to the tree and a prussic knot climbing system. You can be safe climbing. It may take a bit more effort but don't you think its worth it?
