Deer Hit Need Tracking/Shot plaacement Help? Update page 3 pics

Just as I was getting out of stand tonite a 8 pointer come running through the woods right at dark, I finally grunted at him and he come to a slight walk at 15 yards I shot Hitting him High and about mid back. Question: I started my track and only found a few drops of blood out too 50 yards. It got dark on us and we pulled out. The arrow did not pass through. Is there any chance I may have got a lung?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks IA

Sounds more like back lung/liver. ?

Can you explain on this cut away picture above on where you "think" you hit the buck?

possibly but we would need more info. I would go in the morning to track again and see what kind of blood, if it goes further ,can you find the arrow ? it might be a muscle shot in the back strap ?

Wow! I just shot an 8 pt last night and that is basically the same spot I hit him but the good thing is he was quartering away, therefore the arrow went up in and got the liver and 1 lung. We backed out with little blood the same as you, and recovered him this morning not much further but what happened was the arrow didnt go through too, and it clogged the hole giving little blood. But wasyour buckquartering away?..quartering to you?...broadside??? That might play a key role if you hit a lung.

High and middle torso and the arrow stayed in? I hope I'm wrong but I believe you're in for a long, hard track.

That was my exact thought. [&:]

I hope I am dead wrong too, but my experience with shots in that area is not great. Lets hope you got the liver. Good luck!

IA, what area of Iowa are you in? If you're not too far away, I am free to help find your buck for you.

Thanks for the help guys. Ill leave some feedback tomorrow. It was just a poor call on my part. One of the last seconds before dark just got excited, and really shouldnt of took the shot when he was walking. If I dont find him trust me I wont try making that shot ever again.

Is Iowa a legal dog tracking state? I don't see any trackers listed for IA but there are several for IL and I'm not sure how close they are.

Im not sure. But the DNR is pretty thick in the neighborhood. We got checked going in the woods tonite. Ever since that big 270" was shot the DNR has been thick in a 150 mile radius. Im about 30 miles from where he was shot. It should be easier too find some more blood in the daylight. Now im just worried about the temp 60 low.

RE: Deer Hit Need Tracking/Shot plaacement Help?

I think it really depends. That is exactly where I hit my buck last week, and some of the other members feel that I caught a major artery with my rage broadhead because he didnt make it 90 yards. For the first 50 yards there wasn't that much blood as the arrow was still in him. AFter that it really opened up and he had been dead for a while when I recovered him an hour later. I had caught the liver and I think they were right with the major artery because when I first opened him up, he was completely full of blood in the cavity.

Good luck.

Correct me if i am wrong, but isnt there a spot called (no mans land, Void area) if you hit them there they will live and you can get a crack at him later...Hope you find him if not i hope you hit him in no mans land

RE: Deer Hit Need Tracking/Shot plaacement Help?

Also, you shot him off the ground right? So your not going to have the downward angle, there is a good chance you either got liver or you did in fact hit that "void" being a straight away shot like that. Hope you find him. Good Luck

I'm not encouraging anybody to take a slow moving shot but if you do have the proficiency to do so, aim about a foot forward of where you want the arrow to hit. By the time the arrow reaches the deer, it'll hit further back right where you want it. Then again, if you had the proficiency to do so, you wouldn't need the tip.

If you hit the liver he shouldn't be to far. Are there allot of thickets where your at? if so he is probably in there somewhere. How far was your shot? I'm surprised you didn't get a pass throe unless you hit bone. Are you shooting low poundage? GL, I hope you find him.

RE: Deer Hit Need Tracking/Shot plaacement Help?

Got out about 8:00 a.m. started tracking got on a few pin drops of blood. 75 yards from stand found my arrow only went in about 12 - 15 inchs. Lost the blood trail walked avout another 5o yards picked the trail back up just too find 4 small drops of blood, there I sat spinning in circles. Now Im 150 yards out. What way do I go now. The last blood I saw was heading toward a pile of trees so I walked over and there he lays. 150 yards from stand. Needless too say this deer did'nt bleed hardly at all. Its just too bad the coyotes got too him. I was 20 ft up in the tree. Why wasnt there a pass through? 15 yard shot, shooting 70lbs. I must of clipped the lungs??

That's to bad about the yotes. Nice looking buck. The shot looks a little high but more forward than you thought.

IOWAWHITETAILS 11-03-2008 11:41 AM

RE: Deer Hit Need Tracking/Shot plaacement Help?

Yah it is more forward than I thought. It just happened so fast like I said I was just starting too get my gear together and get out of the tree and I heard it come cruising through. The bad part is after tracking by foot and not finding much blood we took both the 4 wheelers in the woods for more light cause I thought I heard it crash, needless too say we were driving in circles around it.

Dopler 11-03-2008 11:42 AM

RE: Deer Hit Need Tracking/Shot plaacement Help?

Yep, definately a lot more forward than you thought, you caught a lung. The shot you originallydescribed is what my hunting friends and I refer to the no mans land shot. Behind the lungs, above the liver, below the spine, minimal guts. I once shot a big 8 with that shot and he was seen 3 weeks later still alive but he had little strength left. I'd rather hit pure guts than the non mans land shot.Nice job on tracking though.

RE: Deer Hit Need Tracking/Shot plaacement Help?

Shooting from 20 feet up in the tree at that anglethat shot was good. The Coyotes are bad most places where I hunt, so I rarely back out unless I see feces on the arrow. I will give them time at least an hour if the shot was good longer if i think I should, and look in the dark with good lights. With a good hit you can recover the deer in the dark. Sorry you lost the meat but at least you got the deer and you didn't wound it.

Good Job of finding your deer, hate that those flea infested dogs got to it first though. I agree, from 20ft. up that is a good shot.

RE: Deer Hit Need Tracking/Shot plaacement Help?

Dumb question, but it doesn't look like the yotes got into the rib cage. Did you investigate to see if you got both lungs? My guess is yes, but you had to go through heavy bone to do so and you were probably high on the right side. No exit wound meant no decent blood trail though. What head were you using, just curious.

It was misfortunate, but I believe you did the right thing in backing out and taking your chances on the yotes.

Congrats on finding him! Nice buck! Time to thin the yote population!

Glad you found him. Time to do some yote huntingYa, something doesn't make sense, I would think you should have got a pass throe. I would check to see if you hit a bone somewhere. I get pass throe at 40 yards, 15 should be a breeze.
