Tarsal Gland

Does anybody know the method for extracting the scent from the gland? I remember something about boiling it, but dont remember the specifics.

Thanks

RE: Tarsal Gland

I work at a taxidermy, so when we get a deer still with back legs attached I'm all over it, lol.

Just cut the glands off as you would before hanging the buck. Once you have them, put them in an air tight jar. No water or anything, they keep in the freezer as long as you have the room to keep the jar. (1gland per jar for a mature deer, 2 glands per jar for the younger ones)

To use:
-Defrost for 1 day prior to use
-Run a ziptie through it and tie a good length of string to that
-Some people drag it into the woods behind their boots, I don't. I just get into the tree and throw the tarsal in a prime shooting area.

I use them because from personal experience I've seen them stop roaming bucks that would've otherwise roamed right past my tree. I'm such a believer in them that I probably have well over 25 stockpiled in my work freezer.

Forgot to mention....DON'T RUB IT ON THE BOTTOM OF YOUR BOOTS!!! Unless you like getting your spot blown up as soon as the buck walks into range.
