Being winded is out of the question.
Unless you're a bubble boy, there's always the chance of getting winded.

Most bucks that you grunt at or rattle to, will approach the sound DOWNWIND.. I have seen bucks up wind of me and grunted and they have made a big loop to get downwind to "smell" the buck that grunted. You gotta be sent freee

I would probably (and ususally do) take the aggressive approach and will grunt or rattle at the buck, depending on the time of year. Now? Definitely rattle.

It is amazing to watch a buck go out of his way to get downwind from where the grunt/rattle is coming from. Gotta love those animals.

I've found that noise and movement stop a deer far more than scent. The other thing I learned is after you get them coming in they will stop if they hear a grunt and do not see another buck. Once they are in sight I stop grunting. SRM

I am always wearing Scent Lok base layers AND my scent blocker outer suit. Being winded is out of the question.

Quote of the season right there!!

I'm with most on this, it is absolutly impossible to eliminate all scent that a deer cna smell, period. I go to obssessed lengths to remain as scentfree as possible and I still have some deer wind me and others not. Some deer are just plain to spooky, no stand site if it is a good one will be perfect to hunt under certain wind conditions, a great stand site could have a deer coming from any dorection at any point, bottom line is do as much as you can and the rest is fate, that's how the big ones get big

I would have taken the chance. Its worth it to me. Most of us havehad those times when deer are directly downwind yet still don't wind us, so there's always that chance. Bottom line, even if he wasn't downwind when you grunted him, he most likely would have come in downwind anyhow if he decided toinvestigate. Good luck, hopefully you'll get another chance.
