Another one bites the dust...

Went home this weekend, and on Friday night made a "spur of the moment" move of the call shop. Had to move it back home. After that, I arrived at the farm around 11:15 Friday night and got some sleep. Woke up and was in the treestand by 5:45. Beautiful overcast morning, and not much was going on. From 715: to 8:00 I heard turkeys going absolutely nuts. 4-6 gobbles, hens yelping and cackling the whole time. VERY COOL.

Around 8:15 I had a does and two fawns make their way past me at 15 yards. Through cover, or else mamma would have been in trouble. I actually drew on here but no dice. The who thing happened inside 2 minutes. Fun, but fast. 5 minutes after that I see a VERY nice doe and a fawn cross the CRP field in front of me at around 5 yards. Again, nothing. Right at 9:00 I see a group of does 125 yards away, to the North. Dad mowed a couple of strips through the CRP, and the deer seem to love 'em. That strip happens to go right to my setup! I draw on the biggest one at 15 yards and hit her a tad high, and forward, but she was quartering to me JUST a bit.

I watch her run back to where she came from, feeling good about the shot, but not the best, by any means. Walk back to the cabin and get the Mule to go find her. No problem, blood was good the whole way.

Here is a view from my stand to the North. The deer came from the far left of this picture.

Here is a picture of the doe. She was around the same size of my first one, maybe bigger. Again, probably 2.5 years old.

Here is a picture, Matt Sell style. I wanted to try out his pose with the doe. Turned out OK.

After the morning hunt, the family came down and we planted some trees and had a good time. Met John (jmbuckhunter) and his taxidermy friend who does SUPER work, and talked hunting for about 2.5 hours and came home. Sunday it was 40 mph winds and I only hunted 5.5 hours. Nothing to write home about, but I did see 6-8 turkeys.

Best of luck fellas if you get out! No more does for a while (probably). Time to get after those mature dudes!

PS- You older folk might appreciate my camo! :D
