hunt or not?
i have tomorrow afternoon/evening to hunt and the same Tuesday...
and all day Thursday. weather tomorrow is 13-15mph winds rain/snow probably not real heavy and probably rain... tuesday is about the same... cold front seems to be moving through now... the wet weather and wind really doesnt quit until thursday. thursday is 50 and sunny as of right now...looks like thats when the weather finally breaks...not that its going to be a total wash...just a cold front, windy and some precip off and on... my big thing is the wind....the spot i have here at school to hunt gets NAILED with wind...its a typical PA BIG hill range...honsestly a good half mile ridge to ridge maybe farther(straight line) its a wide open high hill type of deal and the wind just howls through there...so im betting its more like a stiff 20mph if they forcast 10-15... should i bother hunting tommorrow afternoon or tues afternoon?? what about thursday?? kinda thinking thursday might call for an all day sit...and maybe bag mon and tues and keep the spot fresh and keep myself from the weather...if its not a wash out and winds arent real bad id have NO problem going...the wind bothers me more than anything (fear and it kills me to sit there not being able to hear and rarely see deer in windy conditions...fear of trees falling..the one im in and others around me...ive had REALLY close calls, not while bow hunting, but enough to plant a fear of being in the woods in wind..) what do you guys say? if you were in my shoes, with that forecast and available hunt times, when would you hunt?? no way to get low, no pine stands or anything to shelter me(and the deer) and doesnt matter what side of the hill i get on...it still howls...(the wind) also, if i dont go, i can surely find school work to work on...nothing really "due" but extra study time and getting ahead wont HURT...will help so next week i can spend ALL day in the tree....dying to hunt...just wanna make my trip worth it(pretty good drive) i know i cant kill them from my appartment room...i know that... weather pending i'll still go....but with that forecast, when would YOU hunt and expect to see good deer movement? |
RE: hunt or not?
Personally, my time to hunt is limited, so I hunt every chance I get.....Weather wise, I love to hunt a drizzling rain (right after a down pour and the longer the down pour the better)....I would hunt!!!!! I would just hunt with the wind direction in mind and make the most of my time to hunt, as long as it would be safe to do so!!!!! Best of luck to you brother!!!

RE: hunt or not?
I hunted this pm in 50 mph gusts...and saw deer...

RE: hunt or not?
I'm not hunting tomorrow because of predicted 20-30 mph winds and I need to recheck/retune because of my bow falling from the stand this morning[:@]. But I have all week off! I say go ahead and hunt in your case;).

RE: hunt or not?
thanx guys...just feels like a lost cause once the wind is anything stronger than a breeze....i just really dont like hunting in high wind....
we'll see what the weather actually does...i just know that 10-15 forecasted for there is more like a 20-30 actual...theres been times there was no wind at campus and no wind forcasted up there and ive driven up to listen to trees snapping all day...theres just nothing to stop it or slow it up there....huge wide open valleys... |
RE: hunt or not?
Oh wow I really wish I had your wind speed. I was hunting just about all day yesterday in winds from 40-50 mphs.
We have a radio at our cabin that we have turned on and just when I was about to go out hunting they declared 50 mph in our area. But I just love being out in the woods. Even if you can't hear anything but wind. |
RE: hunt or not?
GO!

RE: hunt or not?
At this point in time, hunt. Get out any chance you can, wind or no wind. Those aren’t that high of speeds, stay on the ground if you are so inclined, but I’d certainly be in the woods that time.

RE: hunt or not?
I will be out in most weather from here on out. It's crunch time now.

RE: hunt or not?
We have 15-20 mph NW winds today, with gusts up to 30MPH. I am gonna do some housework(earn hunting points) and then be on stand by 2 when the wind starts coming down and the temps lower a bit. Crunch time it is!

RE: hunt or not?
thanx guys....i just never see deer movement in winds like this...its gust here...up where i hunt, that means its HOWLING....
im going to hunt with a buddy here close to school...i told him bucks are all his and if he dont want me taking a doe, i'll leave the bow behind and just film him....wind will be lower tomorrow and i'll be in my spot alone from real early afternoon on....just dont wanna burn the gas and time driving to my spot 3x this week(thursday im definently going up) so atleast i'll be out....ive never really filmed so it will be interesting... i know its crunch time...and right about GO time and anything can happen....but i know shooting in high winds is difficult....and trees falling do not intrest me in the least...exspecially a good 2-3 miles from the nearest house and a solid mile or so from my vehicle and no cell phone service...man, i must be getting wiser....i dont think im so "young n dumb" as i used to be...ive had more close calls in high winds than i care to remember...a couple were close enough to be reallllly thankful... |
RE: hunt or not?
Easy answer is "you can not kill a deer from the couch". I'd go!
