Have you ever found someone else's dead deer?

With a few posts being made on people taking their deer they previously shot (only find gutpiles where their deer should be)....it got me to thinking....

How many of you have ever walked up on a freshly killed deer.....from a hunting wound?

I have come across one. I took pictures of a 3 pointer I came across last year. He'd been gunshot and obviously not recovered. I'm certain this happens (as eveidenced by some of the recent posts on this forum).....but I'm wondering how common it is. Having no idea of when the deer was shot.....and not knowing if the hunter was still planning to recover it....I left it alone.

Ever found one? What did you do?

i found an 8 point on the border of our property that had a gunshot wound in its shoulder when we were doing a deer drive at the end of the season, but it had been dead for a little while so we just cut the rack off and went on our way, there really was not anything we could do

I have twice. Both on public land in the Wisconsin gun season. The first 1 I know who shot it and she said she didn't it was a doe and she said she shot a buck. The second I had no clue who shot it and it was a 6 point buck. I looked around and didn't find anybody so I tagged it.

Many many bucks and doe's I've found during slug season In my woods. Pretty pathetic crowd of hunters are my neighboring landowner/hunters.

I just found one yesterday right under my treestand. It was a little 6 pointer that was double lunged with the arrow still in it. I can't for the life of me figure out why the person didn't recover it. It was only about 80 yards from where I think he shot it (ground blind with a bucket thatI don't know how it got there). It's on my new piece of propertythat I recently posted and have exclusive rights to. I'm pretty sure it's one of two people and I plan on finding out soon.

RE: Have you ever found someone else's dead deer?

Back when I was in school, I had traveled up to my dads to get in the Friday evening hunt with a friend. We were walking in together to go to our stands and just about 50 or so yards from where we split I walked right up to this dead spike that was shot in the rear quarter. Not sure who else was hunting there, I went over and picked up my friend and we went back to the deer.

We decided to back track it to see where it came from, thinking we may come across someone who may have lost the trail...sure enough here is one of the neighbors. Asked him how he was doing and he proceeded to tell us that he shot a spike and wasn't sure of the hit...

Well anyway, walked him back to the deer which was obviously his and then we proceeded to our stands. All in all it cost us about 45 minutes, but had we not found it, he wouldn't of that night for sure as he couldn't find much blood.

RE: Have you ever found someone else's dead deer?

Many many moons ago when I was stationed in North Dakota I was walking out the long way from a bow hunt and found a small fork buck laying about fifteen yards just inside the woods. I walked out into the field and waited about ten minutes to see if the only other person who was allowed to hunt this property would drive by. Right as I was getting ready to go talk with the farmer who owned the property about the dead deer a guy drove by asking if I had seen a deer come running out of the woods wounded.

I Told him no but I had found a dead buck and it was in the woods behind me about fifteen yards. The guy was so amazed I did not take his deer he offered me twenty dollars))). Needless to say I turned it down, come to find out he was the adjoining property owner hunting on this property. He was so impressed that I did not bag and tag his deer he offered to let me hunt his property.

So in the end I did the right thing and got about 1000 more acres of land to hunt))).

I find on average three to four uncovered deer every year on the public ground I hunt. That is usually in bow season alone ! Last year I found a six point and three doe. The year before besides the few doeI also found a buck with it's antlerssawed off. What a shame.

I found a big doe 2 years ago out behind my house. I was on my annual "go pick out a Christmas tree" walk with my family, and we walked up on her. She was still warm....gut shot (gun) with NO blood around at all. Hole was plugged up. It was a Sunday afternoon....we can't hunt on Sundays here, and by the looks of it she was probably shot Saturday evening and ran over onto my property. It definitelytook her a while to die. I gave her to my neighbor. He was happy :D

I have found other deer that I know were road hunter losses over the years, one was a nice real 8pt for our area. Around 115". It had been gutshot and ran a good ways from the road. (out of season too.. [:@])

I have found 3. They had been dead for a few days, so I left them there. The yote's will take care of them. All 3 where during gun season.

Ihave only found one. It was on Public land in the big woods of the Shawnee National Forest while still hunting. It was a good sized Doe found mid-morning on the opening day of slug season. She was hit a little far back and was just starting to stiffen up. I backtracked the blood trail until it ended without seeing any sign of who had shot it. I just resumed my hunt and left it laying. I checked on it the next day and the Coyotes had eaten a good deal of it.

Several. Last year I found the body (less the head) of what had to be a very, very nice buck. I came across the smell first and followed it about 80 yards to the carcass. Only the head had been taken off of what was a very big bodied deer. I was the only one with permission to hunt this property so itmademe even more angry that someone had done this on top of tresspassing. I think I know who did it, but the land owner did not want me to confront him.

I usually find 2-3 a year, never found any fresh enough that I would tag and keep...

I found this one.

Through some interesting circumstances, I was able to find who had shot him (during shotgun season, five weeks earlier) and give him the rack.

I was back in the woods with a couple of my buddies playing paintball about 3 years ago. Me and one of my buddies were hiding behind a big pile of branches and leaves and he was kinda sitting down on a stump. Then I heard him cursing and he stood up and got shot. Then he showed us what he was sitting on. It was hind half of a doe that was half hanging out of the pile. Arrow still sticking out of it. It was pretty nasty at that point though. It looked as though it had been there a while.

Call them what they are Poachers.

BTW the only one I found was right near you in the public area just east of Charles town. It was a buck shot in the rear. It stunk and was in some think stuff. Obviously someone had jumped it and slung lead at it. It was dead a week I'm sure. It was a small 4 or six point.

I have found multiple deer before. Some make you mad and some are just plan bad luck.

last year me and a buddy were hunting my farm and a guy on the property next door who has hunting permission gut shot a button buck and left it, the deer ran and laid down under my friends stand. MY friend finished it off. I got there and took the deer next door, the dude was in his truck getting ready to leave. He said i gut shot the deer and didnt think i would be able to find it. The ass didnt even look, and he was using a 30-06and deer only went a 100 yards. We watchedhim!! I had tohave a long talk with the landowner, this guy shot my barn in muzzleloader season, and i cought him on my property twice- some people are bad seeds, others just have bad luck that day.

Two of the biggest deer I have were found, both were a pile of bones. One was foundin the springwhile turkey hunting and the other was during bow season. I asked the neighbor who knows everything about everybody and he hadn't heard of any one losing a deer so I kept it.If I knew who shot it I would have given the rack to them.

I've found three, not fresh, but within a couple of days on my own property. I suspect neighbors pushed them over and just gave up. That's over a nine year period.

I have found quite a few dead deer. Some were shot by other people (poachers and legal hunters alike), some were just piles of bones.

I haven't ever found any that were still fresh though.

RE: Have you ever found someone else's dead deer?

I found a buck last year at the beggining of November that looked to be a 2.5 yr old that had been skull capped. It had been shot right behind the shoulder so It couldnt have possibly went far from where it had been shot, so I hope that it was left to waste just because it wasn't "big enough" and they didn't want to waste their tag. But I always finds deer next to the train tracks by our house that have been hit, never see big bucks hit though.
