RE: Doe hunting v. Buck hunting

I mainly try to fill my buck tag(s) before I attempt a doe. I normally hunt the exact same area's though. It's either feeding area, or a staging point to a feeding area. As far as what you see or harvest, it's being in the right place at the right time and only the Good Lord above knows what will happen.

My line of thought is kinda like this:

Say you are in the city and need a taxi.... you aregoing to go to the spot where the most cars tend to pass.... and if you are there long enough and waiting and ready.... sooner or later one is going to show up.

So that said, I tend to hunt areas that deer frequent. I know the rut is not withstandinghere, but the fact of the matter is that this time ofyear, it is afactor.... bucks are starting to follow does.... find the does... find the bucks. Find the cars... find a cab.

I hope that makes sense.

I will say though GMMAT, that if you have an iffy wind.... its definately good not to hunt a stand you are trying to whack a good buck off of. Hold that Ace til you know its the right time.
That makes alot of sense, my Dad use to say "hunton the corner ofCenter and Main during the rut".

During the rut....I agree....hunt "Deer".....and preferrably where the does frequent.

But I was trying to discern what others did outside the rut.

It worked to an extent, butI think I carried this too far in trying to kill does only in designated areas and my sightings suffered.
My sightings have "suffered" (if that's a bad thing....I don't know), too. I've seen WAY less "deer" this year.....but when I go into areas I expect to see bucks.....I've been seeing them. I don't sneeze at that, at all. It'sa welcome new commodity.

It's getting ready to get REALLY fun, guys.;)

The suffering sightings I was talking of were does (my intended targets). I got overly caught up in trying hunt them in places that were "low impact"that I took myself right out of contention for shooting anything. So I'm having no more of that practice. Outside the rut I will go out and hunt the best places(save 1-2) whereI think I have the best chance at killing a deer & not worry so much about "tainting" it. When the rut comes, some of these places will still get hunted, some will be left for more favorable locations.

I hunt pinch points a lot, so I can (and do) see bucks and does from most of my stand sites. I do not hunt directly over food much, but target pinch points between known bedding areas and food sources.
I have been doing this the last couple years and have been successful with both bucks and does, it makes perfect since to me anyways.

I generally hunt bucks. If I do not get my buck by the end of the rut I will take a doe for the meat. Then again I have been known to take a doe between Sept 15th and Nov. 1st but she has to be a big one.

I went "doe" huntin opening day myself. My intentions were to to take a doe with my bow and a buck with my rifle. Interestingly enough, A really nice buck showed up and all thoughts of does were off the table. Gotta take the shot God gives you I say. Anyway, the buck is at the processor and the doe hunt continues.
